Opening Reception | Anywhere but Now: Solo Painting Exhibition Exploring Fragmented Nature, Time, & Wanderlust

Ron Chen's exhibition, Anywhere but Now, features the artist’s latest Particle Paintings. Chen’s recent works seek to untangle experiences through painted snapshots of moments both lived and imagined. He creates a series of dreamlike spaces that shift between dissolution and resolution, depending on how far or close to them we place our bodies. These compositions mine not only his own sense of familiarity within immersive moments, but also create ambiguous realities that resemble shared memories. What began as a deeply personal engagement with traditions and image sharing between family members has now expanded into broader meditations on memories of experiences, the desire for escapism, and the pursuit to understand both our individual and shared time. Anywhere but Now examines our own impulses to inhabit another time and place while simultaneously being present for the moments that matter within our daily lives. The title of the exhibition underscores our desire to step beyond the relentless influx of constant digital connection coupled with the persistent belief that fulfillment exists elsewhere and beautifully illustrates through painting our conscious and subconscious desire to transcend beyond peripheral distractions. From daydreaming about future possibilities or reminiscing about the past, the artist masterfully builds an opaque middle ground for viewers to take a moment to reflect upon their own lived experiences and consider their personal musings of escape from distractions. His works ask viewers to consider their own participation and attunement within their lives, and question how much of what they are seeing, feeling, and believing has been genuinely achieved, a performance of an alternate self, or if it has been fabricated for them. Rather than striving for realistic accuracy, Chen embraces visual ambiguity through the buildup of his surfaces. His softly applied daubs and strokes reject photorealism in favor of a visual language that mirrors the fragmented nature, time, and our own sense of wanderlust. As in life itself, movement never truly ceases. If not through our bodies, then through our minds, we are constantly wandering between memory, imagination, and anticipation. That restless condition ultimately becomes the condition of Chen's paintings.

Opening Reception | From the Ground Up: Ceramics Exhibition Exploring Racial Stereotypes & Subjectivity

From the Ground Up is an exhibition of recent ceramic sculptures and drawings by Anthony Peyton Young. Merging historic Southern craft traditions and contemporary explorations of identity, Young employs humor and caricature both to dismantle received stereotypes and to explore how those same stereotypes may contribute to the formation of subjectivity. Young’s ceramic vessels, like his paintings and drawings, mine American culture, particularly representations of Blackness, to forge new considerations of how we see ourselves and each other. His figures, more fully realized than just faces, draw upon tropes we know from popular entertainment and daily life. Sagging jeans reveal the tops of plaid boxers; gold chains and grills gleam against dark skin, referring to hip-hop culture, but also to African artistic traditions, in which metals—like the nails driven into wooden Kongo figures—generate spiritual powers. The frequent appearance of cowrie shells also nods to the ancestors.

Film | Lola (1961): French Romantic Drama from Jacques Demy

Described by Demy as "a musical without music," a tale of crisscrossing lives in Nantes. A bored young man meets with his former girlfriend, now a cabaret dancer and single mother, and soon finds himself falling back in love with her. Director: Jacques Demy Cast: Anouk Aimee, Marc Michel, Alan Scott, Jacques Harden, Margo Lion Jacques Demy was a French filmmaker and lyricist. He appeared at the height of the French New Wave. Demy's films are celebrated for their visual style, which drew upon diverse sources such as classic Hollywood musicals, the plein-air realism of his French New Wave colleagues, fairy tales, jazz, Japanese manga, and the opera. His films contain overlapping continuity (i.e., characters cross over from film to film), lush musical scores (typically composed by Michel Legrand), and motifs like teenage love, labor rights, chance encounters, incest, and the intersection between dreams and reality. In French with English subtitles.

Opening Reception | Tops: Multidisciplinary Solo Exhibition Exploring the Spectrum of Identity & Redefining Queerness

Tops is an exhibition of works by artist Lindsay Perryman. Born and raised in New York, Perryman’s work explores the existence, visibility, and nuances of transgender identities. Perryman utilizes their practice to challenge and rewrite misconceptions about the spectrum of identity. They rely on a cultivated visual awareness to reinterpret and redefine queerness. Perryman romanticizes the healing process after top surgery to highlight the importance of community when grappling with trauma, pain, and eventual recovery. Through literal self portraits and self portraits implied through the depiction of others, Perryman elucidates the importance of trans people seeing themselves in a tangible way, whether it be in print, in an artwork on the wall, a film on a screen, or looking back at them from a mirror.

Opening Reception | Under the Skin: Group Exhibition on the Monstrous Feminine

Under the Skin is a celebration of the flesh: mutations, hybrids, and manipulated beings as expressions of how the body can be re-written as a mode of feminist empowerment. The exhibition looks at how abjection is articulated and can be redefined, examining child-birth, care-taking, and body reconfiguration. The works seek to dissolve binary differences and disrupt the social order around female signifiers. The show flips our final understanding of the monstrous feminine into a source of power rather than punishment. It features Sue de Beer, Carly Ries, Alison Kudlow Eva Tellier, Origin I, and Katherine Hubbard.

Lecture | Expert Explores New Geometric Discoveries in Well-Known Shakespeare’s Collection

Architecture historian Matthew Collins presents a thorough and novel geometric analysis of the 1609 cover-page of Shakespeare’s Sonnets (the “Aspley Edition”) synthesizing and resolving disparate discoveries of discrete circles made by other scholars. Publicly revealed in 2016 and 2022 respectively, it is asserted that two subtle, but meaningful figures can be found inherent to the graphic design of this artifact and a great many conclusions from them deduced. Through trial and error, Matthew has sought, using hi-definition practical drafting techniques, to confirm, refine, and resolve the geometries of these two circles into a single structure to demonstrate a formal relationship between them, with primary concern for legibility and reproducibility.

Opening Reception | Psychedelicatessen: A Powerful Dose of Art -- Retro-Style Solo Exhibition on Jewish Cultural Memory

The new exhibit, Psychedelicatessen: A Powerful Dose of Art by Steve Marcus, presents a vibrant parodic mashup of 1960s counterculture and Jewish culture. Inspired by the psychedelic art of the 1960s, Jewish culture, and vernacular graphics, Marcus has created a body of work that twists Jewish tradition together with the visual aesthetics of the Jewish delicatessen and Hippie subcultures. At the heart of Psychedelicatessen is an exploration of cultural memory from multiple perspectives. Marcus draws upon the rich heritage of Eastern European Jewry and the immigrant experience in America, reimagining these traditions through bold colors, layered imagery, and inventive juxtapositions. His artwork invites viewers to consider how Jewish identity is preserved, transformed, and continually reinvented across generations. YIVO Senior Academic Advisor & Director of Exhibitions Eddy Portnoy in conversation with Marcus.

Screening | By George: American History Documentary Premiere on the Waterfront

By George tells the story of July 9, 1776, when New Yorkers gathered downtown to hear the Declaration of Independence read publicly for the first time. In one of the Revolution's earliest and most symbolic acts, the crowd marched to Bowling Green and pulled down the equestrian statue of King George III. The film traces the statue's extraordinary afterlife: its lead was melted down into musket balls to support the revolutionary cause, while the severed head was reportedly smuggled back to England, where it may remain hidden to this day.
