Contributors to the publication Thinking from Black: A Lexicon, an expansive lexicon of words, terms, concepts, and ideas that takes the multiplicity of Black life as its point of departure, will use the exhibition, To Uncover and Reveal to the World, to activate a selection of keywords that engage both the exhibition and ethics of caring for and preserving Black life. The contributors are visual artists, poets, dancers, historians, writers, architects, painters, theorists, activists, anthropologists, filmmakers, educators, and musicians. Gallery Talk | Photographer & Educator Explores His Practices in Cameraless Photography, Ecology, and Environmental Research
An illustrated talk with Aindreas Scholz on cyanotype, ecology, and The Ecological Wetroom. Aindreas Scholz, a photographer, educator, and PhD researcher, leads an evening introducing his practice working across cameraless photography, ecology, and environmental research. Aindreas will trace the development of his practice from cameraless photography and climate-adapted cyanotype to his current PhD research and The Ecological Wetroom. He will explain why a research grant brought him to New York to study Anna Atkins holdings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library, and how this historical research connects to contemporary questions of ecology, water, chemistry and photographic responsibility. The talk will conclude with an introduction to The Ecological Wetroom, an evolving, evidence-based installation and research project that reimagines the photographic wetroom as a visible ecological system, offering an initial look at its findings and future directions.

Over 300 photographs will be exhibited and visitors will be encouraged to vote for their favorite photograph. Vernacular photography, almost always anonymous, can be portraits, landscapes, still lives; snapshots commemorating all sorts of occasions, from family gatherings to graduations, picnics to funerals. Often found in flea markets, antique shops and garage sales, they are both documents and mysteries. Sometimes spontaneous, sometimes posed, vernacular photography marks the transition—and availability—of photography from the studio and the “photographer” to the public at large because of readily available and affordable cameras.

Opening Reception | Sense & the City: Solo Multi-Sensory Exhibition Exploring NYC's 5 Burroughs
This exhibition celebrates eighteen years of Caitlin Van Dusen's adventures around the city, as chronicled in her monthly blog. The show includes multisensory elements, such as scratch-and-sniff scent strips of iconic city smells, a "tactile rail" of touchable objects, and a guest residency by the Surround Sounds Piano_QNS, a retrofitted piano that plays sounds collected from around the borough of Queens. More than two hundred places will be featured, from the sight of faces carved into rocks on Brighton Beach, the smell of a fortune cookie factory in Queens, the sound of Stickball Boulevard in the Bronx, and the tactile sensation of animals in a biblical taxidermy museum in Brooklyn, to the taste of the lost street confection, the Charlotte Russe, from a bakery on Staten Island.

Opening Reception | The Meadow's Edge: Solo Exhibition Catching Glimpses of Transient Atmospheres
In this exhibition, Eric Aho further explores the meadow subject introduced in his 2024 exhibition, Wild Meadow. Returning to the meadow at sunrise, twilight, and throughout the seasons, Aho catches glimpses of transient atmospheres between light and darkness, snow and thaw. Alongside nocturnal paintings of fireflies, moonlit forests, and reimagined Dutch still lifes, Aho addresses the oncoming night and the mysterious forms of illumination therein. Together, these works present an inquiry into the borders of observation and imagination, perception found at the edges of spaces and forms.

Opening Reception | Too Much Is Better Than Too Little: Multi-Artist Exhibition on Germany's Punk Scene
The first exhibition devoted to Alfred Hilsberg and ZickZack ever to be mounted outside Germany. The exhibition will feature rare and unseen records, badges, flyers, and posters from the collection of Christian Iffland; photography and heady documentation by Sabine Schwabroh; and early Super-8 films of Klaus Maeck (filmmaker and founder, in 1979, of Hamburg's first punk store, Rip Off Records). The late 1970s and early 1980s was a period of imaginative intensity, wild recklessness and magnificent mutation in Germany. Not just in Berlin, but in cities and regions across the country, teenagers who had caught the punk virus unlearned their instruments, made strange synthetic sounds that the radio stations and major labels regarded as anti-music, and created a fierce, fractured poetry out of the German language. Abwarts, DAF, Der Plan, Einsturzende Neubaten, Malaria!, Palais Schaumberg, Xmal Deutschland: at the peak of the Cold War, a time of No Wave and No Future, these bands--and hundreds like them--radiated an energy, dark wit and a spirit of experimentation that is still arresting, and in some cases waiting to be discovered still in 2026.

Lecture | The Life and Work of Francisco de Goya: bridging traditional Spanish art and avant-garde movements
Francisco Jose de Goya was well-versed in the best tradition of Spanish painting from El Greco to Velazquez; he is known as the last of the old masters and first of the moderns. In 1786, he became court painter to the Spanish Crown. A severe illness in 1793 left him deaf, after which there is a thread of violence and fear in his work. He became a prolific master of etchings and aquatint, expressing fantastic nightmares. He used humor, irony, and grotesque imagery to critique human nature and explore the subconscious. His dark, psychological exploration of the irrational deeply influenced later avant-garde movements, bridging traditional Spanish art and modern surrealism. He abandoned Spain to retire to Bordeaux in 1824 and died there at age 82.

Classical Music | Directions For Making a Round Ark: Roundtable + Music
A chamber opera in three acts, composed by Stanzi Vaubel, Artistic Director of the Indeterminacy Festival, and Philippe Treuille, which tells the story of the primordial flood. Set in a richly imagined polytheistic world, the opera opens with the creation of humanity as a solution to the gods’ burdens—only for that solution to spiral into chaos. As humans multiply, their noise and presence provoke the wrath of Enlil, king of the gods. Enlil attempts to reduce the population through plague, drought, and ultimately a devastating flood. Each time, Enki intervenes, culminating in a secret warning to build a life-saving ark. Directions For Making a Round Ark reimagines one of humanity’s oldest stories. Inspired by the Babylonian Epic of Atrahasis, the earliest known version of the flood myth, written a thousand years before Noah’s Ark.

Talk | Comparative Literature Scholar Discusses Literary Censorship in the USSR (In Person AND Online!)
For Banned Books Week, Yasha Klots of the Tamizdat Project helps shed light on smuggled literature that defied Soviet censorship and illuminates the enduring power of the printed word. Throughout the Soviet century, tamizdat (literally, "published over there," or abroad) comprised manuscripts rejected, censored, or never submitted for publication at home but smuggled through various channels across the Iron Curtain and printed elsewhere, with or without their authors' knowledge or consent. Until perestroika, when the curtain began to rust, these books were used as weapons on the cultural fronts of the Cold War. In this talk, Yasha Klots will speak about the history of tamizdat as a literary practice and political institution from the Cold War era to the present, when censorship and political repressions in Russia and Belarus have forced an increasing number of authors, publishers, and readers into exile, especially after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He will also speak about the Tamizdat Project, a public scholarship initiative for the study of banned books from the former USSR and Easter Europe, as well as a small press and a philanthropic organization.
