Book Discussion | Anthropologist Shares Her New Nonfiction Title, Creative Ozone: Inside Westbeth’s Legendary Artist Community

Miriam Chaiken offers an intimate look at Westbeth Artists Housing, the legendary residence that shaped New York culture for more than 50 years. In 1970, the former Bell Telephone Laboratories in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village was transformed into Westbeth—an experiment in urban renewal that became the world’s largest and longest-running artists’ residence. From legendary photographer Diane Arbus to avant-garde theater pioneers like Joseph Chaikin and Gloria Miguel, Westbeth nurtured some of the most influential voices in contemporary art. In her book, Creative Ozone, Miriam Chaiken brings an anthropological perspective to her history of this groundbreaking community, where three of her family members lived. She draws on intimate interviews with multiple generations of Westbeth residents to explore how a former industrial building became a home for artists, creativity, and collaboration.

Film | Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980): Psychological Horror Film with Jack Nicholson & Shelley Duvall

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter, where a sinister presence influences the father into violence. At the same time, his psychic son sees horrifying forebodings from both the past and the future. Director: Stanley Kubrick Cast: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, Danny Lloyd Stanley Kubrick was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and photographer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his films were nearly all adaptations of novels or short stories, spanning a number of genres and gaining recognition for their intense attention to detail, innovative cinematography, extensive set design, and dark humor. While many of Kubrick's films were controversial and initially received mixed reviews upon release, most were nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globes, or BAFTA Awards, and underwent critical re-evaluations. Jack Nicholson is an American retired actor and filmmaker. Nicholson is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. Throughout his five-decade career, he received numerous accolades, including three Academy Awards, three BAFTA Film Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. He also received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award in 1994 and the Kennedy Center Honor in 2001. Shelley Duvall was an American actress and producer widely known for her portrayal of distinctive, often eccentric characters. In the 1980s, Duvall became famous for her leading roles, which include Olive Oyl in Altman's live-action feature version of Popeye (1980) and Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's horror film The Shining (1980).

Opening Reception | Sun Water Sky: Solo Painting Exhibition between Abstraction & Representation

New works by EJ Hauser. Inspired by natural phenomena, guided by a process that begins with drawing, and mindful of the act of observation, Hauser makes paintings that fluidly exist between abstraction and representation, combining the graphic symbolism of repeated motifs with the gestural language of poetry. Mostly intimate in scale, the paintings in this exhibition invite close viewing, an immersive concentration which effectively “opens the imagination to something vast” according to Hauser. This act of beholding is central to the work. For Stars Reflected, Hauser recalls the magical experience of falling asleep in the studio and waking up in the night to the sight of the calm creek outside their window, perfectly reflecting the celestial sky. It is believed that ancient Mayan astronomers may have created still pools of water to observe the heavens, a kind of liquid mirror, that allows one to look down in order to look up.

Opening Reception | Vessels: Multi-Artist Exhibition

A continuation of the artist's obsession with converting basic objects of life and labor into still lives that do not sit still, the exhibition presents a semi-simple set of containers. From within vases, studio work clothing, and a shipping crate, an abundance of irrationally reaching flower arrangements spring forth.   The handful of paintings and single sculpture that occupy the gallery's intimate North Room are made using inkjet transfer and acrylic paint on canvas, which both conform to and defy their mediums’ trappings. Paintings become sculptures by revealing their innards and breaking their frames, and sculptures are elaborately constructed stretchers over which image-saturated canvas is stretched. The process-drenched works can be referred to as painting and sculpture, but are initiated by strategies derived from photography, printmaking, performance, surveillance, and meta-fiction.

Tour | Guided Exhibition Tour Exploring Ancient Magic Practices

A walk through the current exhibition, Cursed! The Power of Magic in the Ancient World.  From its integration into religious traditions in Mesopotamia and Egypt, to its marginal, often illicit status in Greece and Rome, magic played a central role in ancient societies. Cursed! examines the visualization and practice of magic between 2000 BCE and 300 CE in these communities, featuring rare objects in a variety of media–including sculpture in stone and bronze; decorated ceramics; amulets in semiprecious stones, gold, and silver; and papyrus scrolls. Taken together, these artifacts reveal a shared human desire: to influence the unseen forces shaping life and death.

Partially a Halloween party, partly an October Revolution celebration, the night will address the Soviet past that is alive in the present. Film | Korean Film Festival: Karma (2026) -- Korean Documentary (+ Director Q&A)

Inside a small judicial scrivener's office at the Seongnam Branch of Suwon District Court, people arrive daily carrying the weight of debt. The father helps them file for rehabilitation and bankruptcy, though he himself is drowning in what he owes. Eight years ago, the filmmaker - who once dreamed of becoming a poet - abandoned his studies and took a seat beside his father, fearing that debt might one day drive him to suicide. As a clerk, he witnesses the endless circulation of suffering caused by money, obligation, and survival. Threaded through this struggle is the quiet presence of his mother, a Buddhist nun who returned to monastic life to repay the debts of her temple, and who eventually achieved financial peace. Between a father still struggling and a mother who endured, the film searches for a modest hope: not redemption, but the possibility of continuing to live. Director: Kim Myun-woo Intro and Q&A with KIM MYUNWOO and KIM SUNAH. English subtitles available.
