Open Studios | Paintings of Observation and Memory

Two concurrent exhibitions explore how artists translate everyday experience into scenes of quiet reflection. Works by David Byrd depict live auctions in rural New York through oil paintings, drawings, and carved sculptures that reveal his role as a distant yet attentive observer. Alongside, new oil paintings by Mike Silva capture fleeting moments of light and absence, using a wet-on-wet technique to evoke the intimacy of memory and time passing. Together, these exhibitions offer meditations on looking, remembering, and the poetry of ordinary life.

Talk | The Darkness of Grimm Fairytales & How To Share Them with Children

The old German fairy tales are weird, and scary, and bloody. They feature murder and threats of incest and child abuse. So should we share them with kids today? Or are they a relic of a time that is (thankfully) long gone? And if we share them with kids today, how should we do that? Is there something useful in these weird, bloody, grim old tales? Adam Gidwitz, the author of A Tale Dark & Grimm and its companions, producer of the animated Netflix adaptation, and creator of the award-winning podcast Grimm, Grimmer, Grimmest, discusses the best--and the grimmest!--elements of the old German fairy tales, especially those by the Brothers Grimm and Franz Xaver von Schonwerth, and he'll discuss the ethics, and his method, of adapting these tales for kids. *Followed by a light reception

Staged Reading | Advance Sneak Peak at Performance Based on Clarice Lispector Book (In Person AND Online!)

Enjoy a special first look at excerpts from The Passion According to Janair, a solo show conceived and performed by Brazilian actress and playwright Ana Carbatti, before it opens at HERE Arts Center. Inspired by The Passion According to G.H. by Clarice Lispector -- Brazil's iconic modernist writer now experiencing a renaissance in the English-speaking world -- the play reimagines Lispector's novel from the point of view of Janair, a Black domestic worker in Rio de Janeiro, as she confronts racial, gender, and class-based oppression. The play is an exploration of systemic injustice, identity, and personal empowerment. Following selected scenes, Carbatti joins in a discussion about the show and Clarice Lispector's work with Suzanne Farrin, composer of Macabea, based on a novel by Lispector, and professor of Music at the CUNY Graduate Center and Hunter College; Idra Novey, a novelist, poet, and translator of Lispector's The Passion According to G.H.; and moderator Mila Burns, associate director of the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center and a professor of History at Lehman College and the Graduate Center.

Centering on two roommates who also work together in a city hospital—head nurse Prabha and recent hire Anu—plus their coworker, cook Parvaty, this film alights on moments of connection and heartache, hope and disappointment. Prabha, her husband from an arranged marriage living in faraway Germany, is courted by a doctor at her hospital; Anu carries on a romance with a Muslim man, which she must keep a secret from her strict Hindu family; Parvaty finds herself dealing with a sudden eviction from her apartment. Kapadia captures the bustle of the metropolis and the open-air tranquility of a seaside village with equal radiance, articulated by her superb actresses and by the camera with a lyrical naturalism that occasionally drifts into dreamlike incandescence. All We Imagine as Light is a soulful study of the transformative power of friendship and sisterhood, in all its complexities and richness. Director: Payal Kapadia Cast: Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon

Discussion | Artist Thaddeus Mosley & Curator Talk about Mosley's New Sculpture Exhibition

Artist Thaddeus Mosley and Public Art Fund Assistant Curator Jenée Daria Strand are in conversation about Touching the Earth, Mosley’s first public art exhibition in New York City, on view at City Hall Park through November. The exhibition features eight bronzes recently cast from wood sculptures Mosley created between 1996 and 2021. In this conversation, Mosley will reflect on the conceptual framework behind Touching the Earth, his improvisational studio practice, and the ways his lifelong engagement with form and material has shaped one of the most significant bodies of work in contemporary sculpture.

Screening | Artists & Filmmakers Explore Love, Place, Memory, & Possibility

Bonding Humanity: Assemblies in Motion is a curated screening program bringing together artists and filmmakers who explore the fragile and shifting ties that shape how we live together -- in public and private, in memory and in movement. Inspired by the poetic, fragmented language of the essay film -- and its ability to hold both intimate reflections and structural critique -- the program imagines cinema as a gathering ground: a space where personal archives, fictional gestures, political ghosts, and speculative futures co-inhabit. These films stretch across disciplines and approaches, yet share a commitment to the aesthetic and ethical practices of bonding -- across silences, distances, ruptures, and shifting perceptions of time. The program features multigenerational voices in filmmaking, each engaging with what it means to hold onto love, place, memory, and possibility.

Author Reading | Hear from Author Anelise Chen on Her New Book, Clam Down: A Metamorphosis

Columbia School of the Arts Writing Professors Anelise Chen and Leslie Jamison in conversation about Chen's new book, Clam Down, A Metaphosis. Synopsis: We’ve all heard the story about waking up as a cockroach—but what if a crisis turned you into a clam? After the dissolution of her marriage, a writer is transformed into a “clam” via typo after her mother keeps texting her to “clam down.” The funny if unhelpful command forces her to ask what it means to “clam down”—to retreat, hide, close up, and stay silent. In order to understand her path, the clam digs into examples of others who have embraced lives of reclusiveness and extremity. Finally, she confronts her own “clam genealogy” to interview her dad, who disappeared for a decade to write a mysterious accounting software called Shell Computing. By excavating his past to better understand his decisions, she learns not only how to forgive him but also how to move on from her own wounds of abandonment and insecurity.

Author Reading | Learn about Philip Roth's Life & Career with His Biographer (In Person AND Online!)

Enjoy a discussion with expert Steven J. Zipperstein on his new book about writer Philip Roth's life and career. In this groundbreaking literary biography, Philip Roth: Stung by Life, professor and author Steven J. Zipperstein captures the complex life and astonishing work of Philip Roth (1933-2018), one of America's most celebrated writers. Roth wrote with ambition and awareness of what was required to produce great literature. And yet, as much as Roth wrote about sex and self, he viewed himself as socially withdrawn, living much like an "unchaste monk" (his words). Drawing on extensive archival materials and over one hundred interviews, including conversations with Roth himself about his life and work, Zipperstein provides an intimate and insightful look at one of the twentieth century's most influential writers, placing his work in the context of his obsessions, as well as American Jewishness, freedom, and sexuality.

Author Reading | Acclaimed Journalist Shares Her Latest Book, Unbearable (In Person AND Online!)

Award-winning journalist Irin Carmon discusses her latest book, Unbearable, which examines what has gone wrong with pregnancy in America. Carmon speaks with legal scholar Melissa Murray about how the healthcare system fails women at their most vulnerable—and why a more dignified future is urgently needed. In Unbearable, Carmon draws on the history and politics of reproduction, showing how the American story of pregnancy has long been incomplete, hidden, or taken for granted. Pregnant herself while reporting on the lived experiences of five women navigating pregnancy during the Supreme Court’s rollback of abortion, Carmon blends personal narrative with rigorous journalism to reveal systemic injustices that span from New York City to rural Alabama, touching lives across both urban and rural communities, rich and poor alike.

Screening | German Vampire FIlms: Jonathan (1970) and Tenderness of the Wolves (1973)

This Halloween season, enjoy a selection of vampire films curated by Deutsche Kinemathek as part of their "Wild, Weird, Bloody. German Genre Films of the 70s" retrospective. Vampires and mortals are welcome to join for a special double bill of Hans W. Geissendorfer's Jonathan (1970), followed by Ulli Lommel's Tenderness of the Wolves (1973). Hans W. Geissendorfer, Jonathan A political parable of Germany's 1960s protest movement, Jonathan is set in an undefined past, when a vampire count ruled a small city and its surrounding lands. The bloodlusty count and his followers target the young, so a group of students plans a revolution, choosing Jonathan as their leader. He ventures to the castle on a reconnaissance mission, but his journey is disrupted by violent obstacles--an amuse-bouche compared to the bloody excesses that await him in the count's abode. Ulli Lommel, Tenderness of the Wolves In a post-war German city, Haarmann, a seasoned criminal, is recruited as a police informant. He uses the cover this position affords him to prey on young boys, luring them into his garret before killing them with a bite to the neck and turning their bodies into sausages. Everyone in town loves Haarmann's meats, from black marketeers to the police inspector, but the tide turns when a nosy neighbor starts putting two and two together. Both films are in German with English subtitles.
