Tour | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | Modern Times in North Korea: Scenes from the Founding Years

North Korea is often portrayed in mainstream media as a backward place without a history worth knowing. But during its founding years (1945-1950), North Korea experienced a radical social revolution when everyday life became the single most important arena for experiencing the revolution in progress. Historical accounts across the political spectrum characterize the five year post-liberation period as a period of competing ideologies. But what distinguished these competing visions for Korea's decolonization were not lofty political goals, since everyone advocated independence and democracy, but the minute details of how everyday life should be organized.

Opening Reception | Paintings by Marcel Eichner

From the gallery: "There are artists who demonstrate early in life an uncanny feeling for the fluid wanderings of a drawn line which directs their imagination and intimate dreams. Eichner's line meanders on the canvas, creating fragile personages and grotesque creatures as it passes, and when it rests there is a world filled with nightmarish scenes and mad demons. Fortunately, a glimmer of humor within these complex, imaginative compositions gives us a reprieve from the chaos and intensity within."

The Bruce High Quality Foundation, whose installations, videos, paintings, sculptures, and performances simultaneously celebrate and critique art’s social history, will present a single exhibition of new work in two Manhattan locations. Meditations is described by BHQF as “a meditation on the historical relationship between works of art and the consolidation and dispersion of political power.” Through the sculptures, painting, and video, the artists will use the visual language of antiquity to explore the ways objects have served as manifestations of power, and to investigate how preservation, historicizing, and collecting practices reveal and obscure other paths of influence and manipulation.

Film | Russian Documentary: Vitaly Mansky's Motherland or Death (2011)

What does a person imagine when they hear about Cuba? Especially those who have never been to this sea-locked state in the Caribbean basin? They probably think of cabriolets driven by glowing fair-haired men in colorful shirts, drinking cocktails and dancing with mulatto ladies, the endless ocean reflected in their eyes. In reality there only exists the endless ocean that cuts the island from the rest of the world. It is hard to find any other country where the discrepancy between its image and reality is as huge as on Cuba. 99 min.

The raw, rough footage offers a surprisingly poetic and novel view of the forlorn country and its inhabitants. 88 min.
