Performance | Playing with Social Codes through Performance Art: The Pin

Artist Pilvi Takala presents The Pin, a new performance that continues her work playing with social codes. Takala's work is set in motion by actors--identifiable only by a pin fastened to their shirts--who canvass the park, blending in with the public until they spontaneously approach unsuspecting passersby. Each performer is trained to improvise based on a script written by the artist, following the responses of the participating public. The seemingly happenstance interactions expose our preconceived expectations of how we engage with others in public spaces, and what might bring strangers to either connect or disengage. In setting up these exchanges, Takala makes visible how we grapple with polite contact, inclusion, and exclusion, while blurring the line between reality and fiction. Pilvi Takala's practice is centered on poking, prodding, and questioning conventions and codes in an effort to lay bare the social frameworks of our offices, parks, shopping malls, and other public spaces. The artist disrupts the experience of daily routines, using performative interventions as a means to push the audience to confront its own assumptions and behaviors. Often humorous--and almost always perplexing--her actions and interactions reveal our inherent discomfort with discomfort.

Play | Award-Winning Italian Play about Dangerous Migration by Sea: Lampedusa Beach

Nadia Kibout is Shauba, an African migrant who drowns near the shores of the island of Lampedusa. In that inexorable time Shauba recounts minute by minute the chronicle of her end. The actress thus brings to life the "Theatre of the Shipwreck." She fulfills her mythical function of giving body to those who are not there and name to those who do not have it. Before her is the audience, facing its responsibilities. The narrative represents the very current issue of migrants. Having set out for Europe, driven by the dream of her beloved Aunt Mahama who wants Africa's children free from the blackmail of capitalism, Shauba faces her journey on a sea cart crammed with migrants, capsizing after a fight between boatmen intent on vying for the young woman's body. The sea is innocent, the narrative suggests; the man, on the other hand, is at fault. The performance is accompanied by the soundscapes of Maestro Daniele Onorati and his oodoo, very special ceramic musical instruments. Opening Reception | Honoring the Known and Lost

Writer, artist, and musician K Allado-McDowell's show features a stage set for Act I of an opera honoring extinct species. The gallery scenography presents a proposed monument through seven cloth backdrops, listing the 180,285 known extinct species, compiled by Allado-McDowell. This list serves as both the opera's libretto and the names to be engraved into the monument. Visitors are invited to read or sing the names over a score by Derrick Skye, performing the first act of the opera and bringing the monument to life in the collective imagination. As species continue to go extinct, their names will be added to the monument in a recurring ritual, framing the human connection to all life. The exhibition prompts reflection on biodiversity loss, reorienting the gaze away from humanity and towards a larger biospheric and ancestral perspective.

Opening Reception | Mysticism and Nature in Oak

Los Angeles-based artist Theodora Allen presents a new body of luminous oil paintings that draw on mythology, symbolism, and the natural world to explore cycles of destruction and renewal. Her compositions feature recurring motifs—such as infinity loops, locusts, and rainbows—set within illusionistic spaces framed by gates, windows, and architectural forms. These elements suggest both access and separation, inviting contemplation of the thresholds between the interior and exterior, the real and the imagined. Allen’s technique, characterized by her precise layering and removal of oil paint, creates a ghostly glow and a sense of stillness, while washes of watercolor introduce an organic unpredictability. The resulting images evoke a sense of both antiquity and timelessness, underscoring the profound interconnection between humanity and the natural world.

Opening Reception | Pioneer of Korean Modernism's Meditation on "Spiritual Refuge": The Eternal Home

Chang Ucchin (1917-1990) was a seminal artist in establishing Korean modernism, developing a distinctive artistic style that embodies a sense of innocence and playfulness. His work has become a cornerstone of modern and contemporary Korean art, leaving behind a significant legacy that reflects his deep affection for family, home, and nature. Chang Ucchin sought to capture the fundamental beauty of life through the simplest forms, depicting familiar natural elements such as trees, birds, the sun, and the moon. These motifs transcend time and space, creating a world of peace and serenity. In his paintings, the home is more than a structure; it is a spiritual refuge, the heart of life, and an ideal space where humanity and nature exist in perfect harmony. This exhibition marks the first dedicated presentation of Chang Ucchin's work in New York. In today's rapidly changing world, his paintings remind us of the warmth of family, the comfort of home, and the tranquil beauty of nature, presenting a space where one can rediscover simple yet profound happiness even within the complexities of urban life. By dissolving the boundaries between reality and the ideal, this exhibition invites audiences to experience the world Chang Ucchin envisioned--one filled with purity, harmony, and the timeless resonance of art. Exhibition on view from May 7th through July 19th.

Opening Reception | The Resurgence of Figurative Painting

Works by John Currin, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Chris Ofili, Laura Owens, Elizabeth Peyton, Luc Tuymans, and Lisa Yuskavage are held in major collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; and the Art Institute of Chicago. This exhibition revisits a pivotal moment in contemporary painting, showcasing the work of eight artists who reshaped figuration in the 1990s. Drawing from classical traditions while introducing bold, personal, and often provocative content, they expanded the possibilities of the figure in art. Many of the featured works are drawn from influential exhibitions that marked turning points in the artists' careers, including Documenta 9, Projects 60 at MoMA, and Sensation. Together, these artists helped to reassert painting's relevance and laid the foundation for the resurgence of figurative art in the 21st century.

Opening Reception | The Space Between Life, Art, and Technology

This exhibition showcases a collaboration between Louise Bonnet and Elizabeth King. Bonnet’s new paintings explore bodies suspended between grotesque physicality and external forces, while King’s sculptures and animations examine lifelike forms inspired by Renaissance automata. Their works interrogate the boundaries between life and nonlife, agency and passivity, and the influence of gender and technology on embodiment. Through their dialogue, De Anima explores the tension between the human and the artificial in an age of biopower and AI.

Nova Ren Suma presents her new book, Wake the Wild Creatures, in conversation with Libba Bray. This extraordinary, timely, and must-read novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nova Ren Suma explores freedom and rage as a young woman named Talia plots her way back to her hidden mountaintop home after her mother's arrest for murder. She has one goal: to return to the Neves. But as Talia awaits a signal from her mother, questions arise. Who betrayed her community, and what is she avoiding about her own role in its collapse? And what does it mean to embrace being her mother’s daughter? With the help of an unexpected ally, Talia must find her way to answers, face a mother who’s often kept her at arm’s length, and try to reach the refuge she lost—if the mist hasn’t swallowed her path home. Nova Ren Suma is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling The Walls Around Us and A Room Away from the Wolves, which were both finalists for the Edgar Award. She also wrote Imaginary Girls and 17 & Gone and co-edited the story & craft anthology FORESHADOW: Stories to Celebrate the Magic of Reading & Writing YA. Libba Bray is the New York Times bestselling author of The Gemma Doyle trilogy; the Michael L. Printz Award-winning Going Bovine; Beauty Queens, an L.A. Times Book Prize finalist; and The Diviners series.

Book Discussion | Cinema History Book Launch: Toward a More Perfect Rebellion

Toward a More Perfect Rebellion tells the riveting story of the socially engaged filmmakers of color who studied in the Ethno-Communications Program at UCLA between 1969 and 1973. While the program is best known for training the trailblazing group of Black directors known as the L.A. Rebellion, this book also includes the radical Asian American, Chicana/o, and Native American filmmakers who collaborated alongside their Black classmates to create one of the most expansive and groundbreaking bodies of work of any US university cohort. Through extensive interviews with the filmmakers and cross-racial analysis of their collective filmography, Josslyn Jeanine Luckett sheds light on a largely untold history of media activists working outside Hollywood yet firmly rooted in Los Angeles, aiming their cameras with urgency and tenderness to capture their communities' stories of power, struggle, and improvisational brilliance.

Author Reading | Journalist Talks about New Book on Aimee Semple McPherson: Controversial Religous Figure (In Person AND Online!)

In Sister, Sinner, journalist Claire Hoffman chronicles the dramatic rise, disappearance, and near-fall of Aimee Semple McPherson. A pioneer of Pentecostalism and founder of the Foursquare Church, McPherson used spectacle, storytelling, and her own radio station to bring God’s message to the masses. Her innovations brought Pentecostalism into the mainstream, paved the way for televangelists, and shaped the future of American Christianity. Her Angelus Temple in Echo Park, Los Angeles, can be called the first megachurch, and the Foursquare Church continues, with more than eight million followers worldwide. In 1926, weeks after McPherson disappeared in the Pacific Ocean, she reappeared in the desert, claiming to have been kidnapped. Hoffman speaks with Columbia Journalism School Dean Jelani Cobb about what happened next—sex scandals, religious persecution, legal shenanigans, the seemingly unshakable faith of her followers, and the media’s race to cover it all. Who was this iconic woman: everybody’s saintly sister or a con-artist sinner?

Talk | Learn about the Wild World of Sea Slugs & Their Toxic Defenses

In the underwater arms race, some organisms don’t just hunt—they steal their prey’s best defenses. This event features Jessica Goodheart, zoology curator, who explores the world of sea slugs and nudibranchs, extraordinary marine animals that have evolved the ability to “borrow” chemical defenses from sponges, anemones, and other prey. Like real-life pirates, these soft-bodied creatures compensate for their lost protective shells by hijacking venomous stingers and potent compounds, turning their meals into powerful tools for survival.  This phenomenon isn’t just a marvel of evolution. It has real-world applications in medicine. Discover how these tiny ocean nomads draw fascinating parallels to other species including poison dart frogs and flatworms!  Event is 21+
