Lecture | American Revolution as a Multimedia Spectacle

Historian Jennifer Tucker explores how the American Revolution was presented as a multimedia spectacle a century before modern retellings. Long before Hamilton or Ken Burns's The American Revolution, people were already finding new ways to tell the story of 1776. A century ago, as America celebrated its 150th anniversary, new technologies like photography, film, and lantern slides--hand-painted or transparent images projected for audiences--were transforming how we visualize history. These tools opened up exciting new ways to show the story of the Revolution. Jennifer Tucker, History Professor at Wesleyan University, explores the 1920s--a pivotal decade when teachers, filmmakers, historians, psychologists, and librarians drew on archives from around the world to build the first large-scale picture collections of U.S. history. Their work helped shape how Americans remembered, told, and debated the nation's past through visual media.

Opening Reception | Compounding Interest: Multi-Artist Exhibition on the Individual vs. the Collective

This exhibition by MFA Fine Arts students, Compounding Interest, explores how ideas, materials, and experiences accumulate through repetition and experimentation, reflecting the emotional threshold of graduating in turbulent times. The works on view are shaped by personal, societal, and geographical influences, revealing how individual perspectives are informed by broader collective conditions. Through processes of layering, revision, and sustained inquiry, small gestures evolve into complex visual statements that question authorship, responsibility, and belonging. Together, the exhibition invites reflection on the tension between the individual “I” and the collective “we,” considering how these artists negotiate identity, community, and agency at a moment of profound transition.

Screening | AngelHeaded Hipster (2022): Documentary on the Music of Marc Bolan & T. Rex (+ Filmmaker Discussion)

AngelHeaded Hipster is the first documentary to explore the complex and revolutionary music and lyrics of Marc Bolan and T. Rex. Using archival performances, interviews with Bolan, Elton John, and Ringo Starr--plus filmed musical interpretations by artists such as Nick Cave, John Cameron Mitchell, Joan Jett, Macy Gray, U2, Lucinda Williams, Father John Misty, and son Rolan Bolan among others--this documentary creates an exuberant and thoughtful examination of a true original: a glam rock pioneer, gender-bending free spirit, and explorer of punk and soul music. We celebrate Bolan's life from his teenage years digging through Carnaby Street dustbins with David Bowie, to his stellar music career and last relationship with Gloria Jones, all through a new, unique creative lens. Director: Ethan Silverman A conversation with Parsons faculty, Ethan Silverman, and College of Performing Arts faculty, Pippin Parker, will follow the screening.

Screening | The Swimmer (1968): Drama Film with Burt Lancaster (+ Discussion)

The Swimmer is a haunting, surreal journey through suburban America, starring Burt Lancaster as a man determined to swim his way home through a chain of backyard pools. As his odyssey unfolds, sunlit affluence exposes the fractures beneath a carefully constructed life. Adapted from John Cheever’s celebrated short story, this 1968 classic is a bold, unsettling meditation on identity, denial, and the cost of illusion. Director: Frank Perry Cast: Burt Lancaster, Janet Landgard, Janice Rule Burt Lancaster was an American actor and film producer. Initially known for playing tough guys with a tender heart, he went on to achieve success with more complex and challenging roles over a 45-year career in films and television series. Classical Music | World Premiere of Boundless: Contemporary Soundscape with Acclaimed Musicians

Experience the one-night-only world premiere and album release of Min Xiao-Fen and Julian Kytasty's Boundless, a spellbinding musical creation where Eastern musical worlds converge. In Boundless, Xiao-Fen, an internationally acclaimed performer of the lute-like Chinese pipa, and Kytasty, a master of the Ukrainian zither-like bandura, join forces for an evening that defies classifications of border and era. In the spirit of the avant-garde improviser Derek Bailey, the string duo will mingle their respective instruments' venerable traditions to form a fresh and daring contemporary soundscape. Xiao-Fen's composition "Xi Xi, Cuo Cuo (Wash and Rub)" reimagines the untold story of Chinese immigrants' relocation to the Mississippi Delta, while Kytasty's "Travel Music" brings to life the journey of a rare bandura from Ukraine to Shanghai to Buenos Aires before finding its permanent home in New York City. Together, these two trailblazing musicians chart a luminous odyssey across personal histories, rich culture, and human connection. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.

Conference | Experts Discuss Music as a Tool of Italian Colonialism

This day-long conference on “Music and Italian Colonialism,” the first of its kind, explores the musical dimensions of Italian colonial expansion in East Africa and their enduring afterlives. Talks examine how both popular and concert music were deployed in service to Italian colonialism, not only as an instrument of propaganda and national identity formation, but also as a means of structuring and recording cultural encounters. Considering perspectives from both Italy and East Africa, the conference explores topics like music’s role in colonial settings; colonial representations through musical theatre and film; the ethnographic collection and recording of East African musical practices during Italian occupation; and the legacies of colonial musical products in contemporary memory. Speakers:  Isabella Abbonizio, Gianpaolo Chiriacò, Tamara Dawit, Yemane Demissie, Francis Falceto, Luca Lévi-Sala, Franco Sciannameo, Dexter Story, Emilio Tamburini
