Early Festivals and Season Openers

Some people just can't wait for summer to be over. The Resonant Bodies Festival begins the day after Labor Day - September 6 - for three consecutive evenings of exquisite and diverse vocal music at Roulette in Brooklyn. The hotly touted soprano Julia Bullock is opening night's highlight. Tickets via Roulette; free admission after 9:00 pm on September 6 only.

The recently-minted LoftOpera has met with great success for its unusual venues, after-parties with a DJ, and of course spectacular productions and excellent performances. Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutti is performed at ShiftKID in Brooklyn on September 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25. Tickets at Loft Opera's website.

The New York Philharmonic is so eager to celebrate its 175th anniversary, it's programmed several performances *before* opening night. The Art of the Score: Film Week at the Philharmonic features our venerable hometown band performing live accompaniment to two New York-centric movies: West Side Story on September 13, 14 and 15; and Woody Allen's Manhattan on September 16 and 17. Then, on September 21, it's opening night, featuring Dvorak's New World Symphony and John Corigliano's Stomp.

From one of our town's oldest orchestras to one of the newest: Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra kicks off its second season with a free concert (hint: all their concerts are free) on September 24, 3 pm. Haydn, Mahler and Moncayo are on tap for this concert at Fort Washington Collegiate Church.

Another fall favorite - though not specifically music - is City Center's annual Fall for Dance, September 26 through October 8. Ensembles including American Ballet Theater, Alvin Ailey, Royal Ballet Flanders and many more perform in rotating programs over the course of the festival. Tickets are $15; they go on sale on September 10 online, by phone and in person at City Center's box office.
