Music on the Water

Gail Wein
July 26, 2016

On a hot summer day, what better than a cool expanse of water surrounding live music? Hang out on a barge that has been converted into a floating concert hall with a drool-inducing view of the Manhattan skyline. Summer bonus: it's air-conditioned. Bargemusic presents chamber music concerts every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the four-day "Here and Now" Labor Day Festival capping off the month. The barge is in Brooklyn on the East River at Fulton Ferry Landing near the Brooklyn Bridge. Tickets available on-line or at the door.

Or, take a short cruise. Very short, from South Ferry in Manhattan to Governor's Island, where the free Rite of Summer series winds up its 2016 season on August 27 with a bang. Many bangs, in fact. The adventurous directors are staging two performances of Inuksuit, by the Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Luther Adams. Over 60 percussionists will fill Nolan Park on the island, with an environmental piece that is as much visual as it is aural.

At the end of the month and over the holiday weekend, head over to Lincoln Center for the Metropolitan Opera's "Summer HD Festival". The free outdoor screenings of opera performances from previous Met seasons include The Marriage of Figaro (August 27), Turandot (September 4) and La Cenerentola (September 1), Rossini's operatic take on the Cinderella story. The fest kicks off with the film Amadeus on August 26, and runs every evening through September 5.

Lincoln Center Out Of Doors brings more free al fresco fun, with events through August 13. Highlights include a daylong celebration of Lou Reed on July 30, Soledad Barrio, Noche Flamenco and the Manhattan Camerata on August 3, and the American Roots festival on August 6 and 7. Mostly Mozart has events inside and out, featuring the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and big-name soloists like the violinist Joshua Bell and the pianist Richard Goode. Mark Morris Dance Group concludes the festival with performances August 24-27. Tickets for sale at the Lincoln Center box office.

Stay cool and enjoy the music!
