April: A Torrent of Concerts

Gail Wein
March 30, 2016

April is typically one of the busiest months for concerts. Checking my own calendar, I have a slew of events noted on just a single day: April 17. You'll have some difficult choices to make if you're heading to a performance that day: Emerson Quartet at Lincoln Center, the pianist Jeremy Denk and the Artemis Quartet in two separate concerts at Carnegie Hall, Calidore String Quartet at Town Hall, NY Philharmonic Chamber Ensembles (afternoon) Four Nations Ensemble (evening) at Merkin, a Spring Kammerraku of chamber music at Tenri Cultural Institute, and the Baltimore Consort at the Cloisters. Check with each venue about ticket sales. Whew!

The calendar is similarly full for most of the month. When was the last time you heard a concerto for two clarinets? I thought so. You can hear Krommer's concerto performed by the American Classical Orchestra on April 5 at St. Ignatius of Antioch Church on W 87th Street. Tickets available through the ACO.

The following evening, April 6, it's music with a mission at Symphony Space. A concert of two-hand, four-hand, and six-hand piano repertoire featuring the pianists Warren Jones, Margaret Kampmeier and Cecile Licad benefits the Tenants Action Group of 711 West End Ave. The tenants mission is to halt the development of a luxury condominium to be built above and around its current building. Tickets available through Symphony Space.

The Kronos Quartet - known for its championing of new music - has taken on the enormous task of commissioning 50 new works, ten each year for five years. Carnegie Hall is a partner in this endeavor, and they present Kronos on April 2 with a program replete with world and regional premieres. Kronos will be around the venerable hall quite a bit this month, leading a workshop with three young professional quartets, culminating in a concert on April 15. On April 13, Carnegie hosts a forum in which Kronos discusses their Fifty for the Future project, including a demonstration and a performance by one of Kronos’ young Face the Music ensembles. Tickets available through Carnegie Hall.

Notable new music festivals are coming up soon: MATA Festival runs April 11 - 16, featuring music by composers under 40 from around the world. Events are in various locations around lower Manhattan, and tickets are available through MATA. Look and Listen celebrates its 15th anniversary with three free concerts in Brooklyn, April 29, 30 and May 6. As its name implies, visual art is featured along with music performances. If you are a contemporary music fan, you can consider these as a prelude to New York Philharmonic's Biennial: three weeks of new music by 74 composers in 8 venues around town, May 23 - June 11.
