Tis the season for the glitz and glamour of opening nights. The Metropolitan Opera continues its tradition of the free live screening at Times Square on its opening night with Verdi's Otello on September 21. Yannick Nezet-Seguin, music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducts.
The New York Philharmonic brings out serious star power - the pianist Lang Lang - for its opening night on September 24. Alan Gilbert leads our hometown band in a program of music by Beethoven and Grieg at David Geffen Hall. Where? That's the Hall Formerly Known as Avery Fisher, thanks to Geffen's recent extraordinarily generous support of Lincoln Center. Tickets via NY Phil website.
New York Philharmonic is front and center for another major season opener on October 7. Carnegie Hall's first big concert of its 125th season (125th!) features pianist Evgeny Kissen performing Tchaikovsky with our hometown band, led by the Philharmonic's conductor, Alan Gilbert.
The concert season seems to begin earlier every year. Bargemusic wastes no time in starting the party with its Here and Now Labor Day Festival, Sept 2-6 (no performance on the 3rd, advance tickets on its website). The program features premieres by John Zorn, Morton Subotnick, Dalit Warshaw and several others. The floating fiesta is parked on the water at Fulton Ferry Landing near the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Just after Labor Day, the Resonant Bodies Festival gets underway, a survey of contemporary vocal music over three concerts. September 9 at Merkin Hall features sopranos Tony Arnold, Lucy Shelton and Dawn Upshaw, it just doesn't get any better than that. The performances on September 10 (Abrons Arts Center) and September 11 (Roulette) also boast can't-miss performers and programs. See each venue's website for tickets.
SubCulture, the cozy downstairs joint on Bleecker Street, hurtles into the season on September 16 with artists who ordinarily play in much larger venues: the Emerson String Quartet with Renee Fleming. It's a rare chance to hear these big guns in such an intimate space - and, even better, you can sip on a glass of wine while you listen.
That's just the beginning. The fall concert season in New York is shaping up to be one of the busiest ever. Watch this space for more highlights throughout the season.
