Summer in the City, 2015

Gail Wein
July 05, 2015

July in New York brings us luxuriously long days and warm summer evenings. It also brings over 100 pianists to town to participate International Keyboard Institute and Festival. IKIF has been a New York summer mainstay since 1999, featuring two weeks of piano recitals by the institute's world-class faculty and guest artists, including Marc Andre-Hamelin (July 19), Alessio Bax (July 22) and its founder, Jerome Rose (July 18). This year, the entire operation moves to Hunter College, with performances at Kaye Playhouse (68th Street between Park and Lexington) and Lang recital hall. Concerts are every night at 8 pm, July 18 - August 2; there are also masterclasses and lectures open to the public. Single tickets and festival passes are available through the Kaye Playhouse box office.

Lincoln Center is a hub of activity all summer long. The completely free Lincoln Center Out of Doors begins on July 22 and runs through August 9. Highlights include Randy Newman, Wycliffe Gordon and Lil' Buck (July 25), Judy Collins (July 26), Iris Dement and Lyle Lovett (August 9), and a late night, 'silent' screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in which the audience hears the sound on wireless headphones (August 7). There's also Lincoln Center Festival (July 6 - August 2, tickets at Lincoln Center box office) which includes performances by The Cleveland Orchestra (July 15-18), Harry Partch's music-theater work Delusion of the Fury (July 23 and 24), and the piano-percussion ensemble Yarn/Wire performing three world premieres (July 15). And of course there's LC's Mostly Mozart (July 25- August 22, tickets at Lincoln Center box office).

If you like great art with your live music, don't miss the free concerts in the sculpture garden at Museum of Modern Art. MoMA's Summergarden schedule includes the Juilliard Ensemble (July 5 and 19), and jazz performances (July 12 and 26). Concerts begin at 8, gates open at 7; arrive early to get decent seats.

No article about NYC summer concerts is complete without a mention of Celebrate Brooklyn! at the Prospect Park Bandshell and SummerStage at Central Park and other city parks. Highlights of Celebrate Brooklyn's free concerts include Punch Brothers (July 9), The New Pornographers (July 11) and Taylor Mac (August 1). SummerStage offers everything from jazz to world music to opera, and lots in between all free (except for the benefit concerts). The extended season runs through October.

Enjoy your summer and stay cool!
