Ludwig van Beethoven is often feted in December, coinciding with his birthday on the 16th of that month. But anytime is a great time to hear this master’s music, and the month of May is a case in point.
Beethoven wrote 32 piano sonatas, and every one of them is a hit. If you have 13 ½ hours to spare on May 9, you can hear them all. Twenty pianists - from Timo Andres to Shai Wosner - take their turn onstage at BAM in this WQXR-sponsored marathon.
As if to prove that you cannot ever have enough Beethoven, the Ariel Quartet performs two of his string quartets at SubCulture on May 12. This is the last in their monthly series, in which they tackled all 16 of Beethoven’s works for string quartet.
The Philadelphia Orchestra brings compositions by three composers to the stage at Carnegie Hall on May 14. One of the three is ….say it with me now…Beethoven!
Emanuel Ax is the soloist for Beethoven’s towering Piano Concerto No. 3, and the venerable orchestra will be led by its music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
As we roar into summer (though it seems as if warm weather will never get here), festivals and outdoor concerts are on my mind. I have been eagerly awaiting season announcements for River To River, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, and Celebrate Brooklyn! On the other hand, SummerStage, Lincoln Center Festival, Mostly Mozart, and a number of other fests have already announced their excellent offerings for summer 2015.
Most notably, New York Philharmonic is celebrating 50 years of Concerts in the Parks, and you can bet they’ll be pulling out all the stops with top-notch programming.
Indoors and out, there’s plenty of live music as the mercury begins to climb. Enjoy!
