Music in the Schools

Gail Wein
January 31, 2015

Educational institutions are one of the richest sources of live performances in the city.
You can easily fill up your calendar just with conservatory concerts. Of course there’s The Juilliard School. Their schedule is chock-full with as many as a half-dozen student, faculty and guest artist performances each day, almost always free. There’s also Manhattan School of Music (120 Claremont Ave) and Mannes College. Mannes is now part of The New School, and this fall it’ll be moving its operations to The New School campus in Greenwich Village. You can the last few months of concerts held on the upper west side, (150 W 85th St), including Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo on February 8 and Orion String Quartet on February 12 and April 18.

Let’s not overlook some of the other colleges. Miller Theatre at Columbia University is host to a variety of series. Coming up, composers Missy Mazzoli (February 5) and Stefano Gervasoni (February 19) on the Composer Portraits series, Stile Antico (Feb 28) on the Early Music series, and Aaron Diehl Quartet (March 7) on the Jazz series. Tickets can be purchased via Miller’s website. Miller Theatre is also host to free Pop-Up Concerts which feature cutting edge performances and free drinks. Coming up is JACK Quartet (February 24) and Yarn/Wire (March 24).

Downtown, Pace University hosts a nice variety series at their steeply raked but cozy Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts on 3 Spruce Street. Check out silent films with live accompaniment, Mark of Zorro (February 1) and IT (April 19); and superstar Patti LuPone on May 9.

Baruch Performing Arts Center at Baruch College (55 Lexington Avenue) is deep underground, two floors below street level. It offers a smattering of chamber concerts through the season. Coming up is Repast Baroque (February 4) and classical guitarist Xufei Yang (March 13).

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts College (250 Bedford Park Boulevard West in The Bronx) boasts a really interesting concert series, seeming to slant toward Latino artists. Full disclosure: I haven’t been there yet. But with acts like Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico (February 14) and conjunto star Tito Nieves (March 14) on the way, easy access via two subway lines, and reasonable ticket prices, it won’t be long.

See you in school!
