December Concerts With and Without Jingle

Gail Wein
November 28, 2014

December is full of wonderful holiday concerts all over New York. You can scarcely walk down Broadway without tripping on a jingle bell or stumbling into O Christmas Tree. I don't think you need my help to find holiday music. But you might want some direction to find musical entertainment other than Handel’s Messiah and holiday carol sing-alongs.

Gotham Chamber Opera’s production of “Puss In Boots” (“El gato con botas”) by Xavier Montsalvatge was very popular four years ago, and they are remounting this intriguing take on the classic kids tale, complete with Bunraku puppetry. Xavier Montsalvatge, by the way, was from the Catalan region of Spain; you can impress your friends by knowing how to say his name: chub-YAY mont-sal-VATCH-ay. December 6-14 at El Museo del Barrio on Fifth Ave. Tickets available through Ticket Central.

The Met Opera also offers a production with family appeal: Hansel and Gretel. At just over two hours long, this age-old fairy tale in which two children face off against a wicked witch is not ideal for the very young, but it promises to be a delight for the rest of the clan. December 18, 23, 27, 30, January 1, 3, and 8 at the Metropolitan Opera House. Tickets available through the Met Opera’s box office.

The New York String Orchestra’s December concerts at Carnegie Hall have become an annual tradition. The orchestra, led by Jaime Laredo, is comprised of college-age musicians cherry-picked from around the country who trade in their family holiday celebration for intensive workshops with the masters. December 24th is an all-Mozart program, and the December 28th program features Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony. Tickets start at 12.50, available through Carnegie Hall’s box office.

Trinity Wall Street’s Twelfth Night Festival runs from December 26 to January 5, this year featuring Handel’s Saul, guest artists Gotham Early Music Scene (returning with the Play of Daniel) and Roomful of Teeth. Most of the Twelfth Night Festival offerings are free admission. More information is at the Trinity Wall Street website. And, hey, if you have a hankering for Handel’s Messiah, Trinity has that too, on December 17, 19, 21 at Trinity Church (free), and on December 18 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall (tickets through Lincoln Center).

See you at the concert hall!
