England has one. So does France. And Mexico, too. A national youth orchestra, that is. And now, the US has one, too, and this group of 16-19 year-olds will make their Carnegie Hall debut on July 22. If you're not sure why you should care about concerts performed by teen musicians, think again. These 100 or so youthful musicians are the best of the best, hand-picked from all over the country. In this concert, they'll be led by the venerable conductor David Robertson and joined by violin soloist Gil Shaham; Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition highlights the program. Tickets range in price from $13 - $60 and can be purchased at carnegiehall.com.
If you follow the Pulitzer prize winners in music, you'll have heard of this year's winner John Luther Adams (not to be confused with the composer John Adams, one of the top living American composers, whose opera The Death of Klinghoffer is currently mired in controversy over its HD broadcasts at the Met Opera). Works by John Luther Adams are inspired by the natural world and the great outdoors of his home state of Alaska. The world premiere of his work Sila is free, at Lincoln Center Out of Doors on July 25 and 26. It involves a large cast of performing artists, including members of eighth blackbird, JACK Quartet, Face the Music, and half a dozen other groups. Sila: The Breath of the World depicts the Inuit tradition of the sila - the spirit that animates all things—the wind, the weather, and all forces of nature.
Keyboard fans will be excited about IKIF - the International Keyboard Institute and Festival held at Mannes College every summer. This year's institute is July 13-27, and features Marc-André Hamelin (July 20), Alon Goldstein (July 16), Conor Hanick (July 21), and David Dubal (July 21), and many many more. Each concert is $20 and a festival pass is available for $250. Tickets can be purchased at ikif.org. This is the 16th year of the institute, founded and directed by Jerome Rose (who is also a great pianist; don’t miss his performance on July 13).
