Classical Music in NYC: A Whirlwind in October

Gail Wein
October 02, 2016

The season is in full swing, and there are loads of concerts to choose from in October. At least a few days this month will pose some difficult decisions, thought too many great performances is a good problem to have. Luckily you'll win no matter what you choose.

On October 26, for example, there are three different, but equally tantalizing shows in the three spaces at Carnegie Hall: the fabulous Danish String Quartet playing Shostakovich and Schubert, the Russian pianist Denis Matsuev in recital, and the opening concert of the Festival Chamber Music series in the intimate Weill Recital Hall.

Over at Lincoln Center, there's a free concert with the Mannes Orchestra led by special guest conductor JoAnn Falletta, in celebration of the Mannes School of Music's hundredth anniversary. Also at Lincoln Center, "Babel" features choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and music by a host of Indian musicians, as part of the White Light Festival.

Uptown, the pianist and composer Gregg Kallor appears at the Crypt Sessions in the atmospheric Church of the Intercession in Harlem. In honor of Halloween, Kallor presents his own take on Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-tale Heart" with the mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Pojanowski and the cellist Joshua Roman.

Speaking of opera, the newly resurrected New York City Opera presents "Pasion Latina", featuring Placido Domingo, Jr and other acclaimed vocalists in recital. That's all happening on October 26, and tickets are for sale at each venue.

Earlier in the month, there is the splashy season opener at Carnegie Hall on October 6, featuring the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra from Venezuela, conducted by its most famous alum Gustavo Dudamel. The acclaimed youth orchestra from South America also performs on October 7 and 8 at Carnegie, all-in-all a great launch to the venerable institution's season.

At the Tenri Cultural Institute, the Momenta Quartet presents its second annual festival. Each of the four concerts (September 28 - October 2) is curated by a different quartet member, promising a diverse and exciting week of concerts. Tickets for sale via Brown Paper Tickets or at the door. On the east side of town, the Society of the Americas presents the pianist Roberto Hildago in recital with a program of works by Chavez and Copland on October 14. The concert is free for SOA members and is open to all. Another fine pianist, Yuja Wang, performs Ravel with the London Symphony Orchestra on October 28 at Lincoln Center and October 29 at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

Yes, it's a busy month, and you'll have a great experience no matter which performances you attend.
