Festival Time! Make Music NY, Bang on a Can and Chelsea Chamber Music

Gail Wein
June 01, 2014

It's festival time around New York, and the biggest of them all is Make Music New York on June 21. It's a one-day frenzy of free concerts, in every borough, and practically on every streetcorner. You like flutes? See hundreds play Henry Brant’s Mass in Gregorian Chant for Multiple Flutes in Central Park. Into bluegrass and old-timey music? Check out the Porch Stomp on Governor's Island. Like vocal music? You can join in the event for synchronized headphone choir in honor of a Dylan Thomas poem, at Rockefeller Park.

More than 1200 concerts happen from 10 am to 10 pm. It's a great day of discovery, too. Last year I somehow missed the performance I wanted to hear in Greenwich Village. On my way back to the subway, I came upon two other music groups performing, that I had never heard of before, and that I really enjoyed. It's all free, and it's everywhere - just open your ears as you go about town. Information and schedule at http://makemusicny.org/summer-schedule/

Another festival , slightly less broad than the polyglot of MMNY, is the Chelsea Music Festival, June 6-14 at various indoor and outdoor venues in Chelsea (of course). Some concerts are free, some are ticketed, all are worthwhile. Ken-David Masur and Melissa Lee Masur are co-artistic directors of this festival. Ken-David, by the way, has just been appointed as assistant conductor at Boston Symphony, which is a Really Big Deal. Programs, schedule and tickets at http://www.chelseamusicfestival.org.

One more festival to mention - though there are so many more to explore in New York this month - is the River to River Festival, June 19-29 (http://lmcc.net/filter/calendar/). Lots of great music and dance performances, and more, all free. The fest is crowned by the 27th annual Bang on a Can Marathon on June 22 from 2- 10 (http://bangonacan.org/bang_on_a_can_marathon). Yes, you will be busy that weekend!
