There's lots of cheer in the cold, dark days of February, with a potpourri of concerts all around town.
Composers Now is a new music festival that goes on for the entire month. Under the festival's umbrella is any concert in New York City in which the composer is present. Events - dozens of them - are listed on the Composers Now website.
One of the most intriguing unions in music history is the composer/pianist Clara Schumann and her composer husband, Robert. The Music and More series presents a 21st century riff on this relationship with "Modern Claras" on February 9 at Good Shepherd Church (W. 66th Street). Among the five award-winning pianists and their award-winning husband-composers are Evelyne Luest and Aaron Jay Kernis and Lisa Moore and Martin Bresnick. Tickets available online or at the door.
Other concerts to put on your calendar: New York Philharmonic's Chinese New Year concert on February 9 at Lincoln Center. On the program, one of the most well-known Chinese works for orchestra, The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, and a premiere of a work for harp and orchestra by Tan Dun (you've heard his music in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). At Carnegie Hall on February 18, the Budapest Festival Orchestra performs, led by Ivan Fischer with piano soloist Marc-Andre Hamelin. In my opinion, this is one of the best orchestras in Europe.
And in early March, the Minnesota Orchestra comes to New York to take in the warm(er) weather (it's all relative, you know). The orchestra and its music director Osmo Vanska are top interpreters of music by Sibelius, and their program at Carnegie Hall on March 3 is entirely music by that Finnish composer. Not to be missed. The violinist Hilary Hahn is soloist, another reason to get yourself to that concert.
