June is busting out all over…with free outdoor concerts

Gail Wein
May 31, 2015

This month, the NY Philharmonic celebrates 50 years of concerts in the parks, with an all-American program featuring Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and violinist Joshua Bell as soloist in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Suite on June 17. On June 18, conductor Charles Dutoit leads the charge, with an all-French program capped by Igor Stravinsky’s colorful account of a Parisian puppet show, Petrouskha. Both concerts are free, and begin at 8 pm in Central Park. The French program is repeated on June 19 in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Soprano Julia Bullock is featured on June 22 (Cunningham Park in Queens) and June 23 (Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx). Bullock is a rising star, and though that phrase is so often bandied about, believe me when I tell you, you will be hearing about this phenomenal young performer for many years to come. Bring a picnic, spread out on the grass and enjoy the sounds of one of the best orchestras in the universe. AND after each concert: Fireworks!

More free outdoor music: every Monday between now and June 15, Chamber Music America, presents classical and jazz performances at Bryant Park. June 1, the two-harp ensemble Duo Scorpio performs music by Nico Muhly, plus jazz with Alexis Cuadrado Group; June 8 it’s the ensemble Music From China and Ben Wendel Group, and on June 15, six different groups perform, including Sybarite5 Don Byron Quartet. Bryant Park, by the way, is a hotbed of activity all through the summer, with noon-time concerts, tango dancing, Shakespeare, Accordion performances, and its famous and very popular Monday night film screenings which begins on June 22 with Ghostbusters.

The Naumberg Bandshell in Central Park has been home to free concerts for over 150 years. That’s not a typo – live music performances were held at this spot as early as 1862. Concerts this summer include The Knights (June 23), Ensemble LPR (June 30), Boston Symphony Chamber Players (July 14), Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (July 21), and the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (August 4).

Also this summer, check out these annual favorite series: River to River Festival, SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn, Washington Square Music Festival, concerts at Madison Square Park and oh so much more.

Coming up on June 21, it’s Make Music New York (1000 free concerts in the five boroughs) and the Bang on a Can Marathon concert.

Check back here for a special Summer Solstice Edition post with more details, soon.
