April Showers Bring A Flood of Amazing Music to New York

Gail Wein
March 31, 2015

The aroma of daffodils is in the air, and this month there’s a tidal wave of culture coming to New York City.

The incomparable early music master Jordi Savall brings a fresh breeze to Carnegie Hall in a solo recital on March 13, and with his ensemble Le Concert des Nations on April 16. It’s part of Carnegie’s Before Bach” festival which runs April 7-May 1.

The celebrated vocal group Anonymous 4 wafts into town to give a rare live performance on April 23 at The Great Hall at Cooper Union. They are joined by fiddler Bruce Molsky in a program that commemorates the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

Also of keen interest is the New York premiere of Wynton Marsalis’s “Blues Symphony”, performed by the American Composer’s Orchestra at Jazz at Lincoln Center. And, back at Carnegie on April 26, the Australian Chamber Orchestra performs an insanely varied program that includes a Haydn symphony and a new work by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Soloist Martin Frost, perhaps the most breath-taking clarinetist I’ve ever heard, is featured in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, along with this impressive Aussie group.

April is a hot month for new music: the annual MATA Festival celebrates composers under 40 from around the world. The festival runs April 13-19, with most performances at The Kitchen. Plus, it’s the 85th birthday of George Crumb, one of the elder statesmen of contemporary American music, and you can celebrate at SubCulture with a Crumb-centric concert performed by counter)induction on April 11.

Two free programs at the end of April are heartily recommended: Symphony Space’s annual Wall-to-Wall marathon concert on April 25. This year the marathon of music (4 pm – 11 pm) revolves around Johnny Cash, and features blues, bluegrass and folk artists from near and far. (This will be your second opportunity this month to see the fiddler Bruce Molsky). And, just across the street on Broadway at 93rd St at Advent Lutheran Church, the Music Mondays series comes through once again with the phenomenal Miro Quartet performing Haydn, Schubert and Copland, on April 27.

You can dodge the spring rains by ducking into the concert hall. Don’t forget your umbrella!
