It's the Dog Days of Summer, and there is fun to be had both indoors and out.
Lincoln Center offers concerts both with and without a roof this month. Inside it's the annual Mostly Mozart Festival, which runs through August 23. There are a number of different artists and performers featured in the festival; with the eponymous Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, conducted by Louis Langree, topping the list. There are some free events, though most are ticketed. Visit mostlymozart.org for tickets and more info.
Lincoln Center Out of Doors, another long-standing summer tradition, features free performances, often with big names. I've got my eye on Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell on August 6, Cassandra Wilson on August 8 and Roseanne Cash on August 9. LC Out of Doors runs through August 10. Most performances are at Damrosch Park Bandshell, but check lcoutofdoors.org for the complete schedule and locations.
The tail end of August is typically a dead zone for live music around here. But not entirely. The 21st annual Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, presented by SummerStage, offers two days of free live jazz with great performers. August 23 at Marcus Garvey Park; August 24 at Tomkins Square Park, both run 3-7 pm. More info at: http://www.cityparksfoundation.org/calendar/charlie-parker-jazz-festival/.
And, as a bassoonist, I am personally very excited about the IDRS conference, August 5-9. IDRS is the International Double Reed Society, and this will be the biggest gathering of bassoonists and oboists, ever. The conference is mainly masterclasses and gear-heady seminars on things like reed-making. But there are a number of performances open to the public at SubCulture and Joe's Pub (these are ticketed events), and they are not to be missed. Info at http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/idrs2014/events/nights_out. If you're lucky, you'll run into the Double Reed Flash Mob on Saturday, August 9, which begins at 7 pm, location to be announced on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/IDRSFlashMob.
