Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

The exhibit showcases, a small hidden part of French heritage, known as Tyrosemiophilia, the hobby of collecting cheese labels, also known as Etiquettes. These miniature works of art contain writing, pictures and styles that bear witness to an industrial past where small cheese diaries thrived everywhere in France. Lecture | Harlem in the 1960s: Civil Rights and Black Power

Both the civil rights and black power movements, which were a prominent part of the turbulent 1960's, had their roots in the nineteenth century as the Afro American Council and the Afro American League, formed in the 1890's, advocated for an end to lynching and voting exclusion. The NAACP, founded in 1909, is the best known of the modern civil rights organizations but it was overshadowed in the 1960's by the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee. There will be an examination of the tactics of these various groups as well as an examination of the role of the courts, the media, Congress and public opinion in bringing about civil rights enactments. The black power movement emphasized political, cultural and economic separation which led to conflicts with the NAACP, the FBI and moderates within the civil rights movement. There will be a historical discussion of the pros and cons of the black power movement which challenged the prospect of integration into American society. Presenter William Seraile has a doctorate in American history, retired from Lehman College's Dept of African and African American Studies after thirty six years of teaching, is the author of five books and the recipient of many awards including the prestigious Association for the Study of African American Life and History's Carter G. Woodson Scholars Medallion.

Jazz | The Chip Shelton PeaceTime Ensemble

With incredible talent and perseverance, Chip Shelton has earned an undisputed reputation as one of the most renowned flutists in the world of jazz. The flute, with its high-pitched tone, didn’t start out as a swinging jazz instrument until Frank Wess first popularized it as a member of Count Basie’s Big Band. He set the standard for such noted flutists as Yusef Lateef, Herbie Mann, Charles Lloyd, and Hubert Laws that further propelled the instrument into the jazz spotlight. What separates Shelton from his legendary predecessors is his ability as a multi-instrumentalist.
