Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. The tour is every Monday.

Talk | Inclusivity and Indie Authors: The Case for Community-Based Publishing

Authors of color who are excluded from the traditional publishing industry are increasingly turning to self-publishing. As an indie author, Zetta Elliott has the freedom to write about the things that matter most to the members of her community, rather than waiting for approval from the gatekeepers who lack the cultural competence needed to truly appreciate the work of non-traditional authors. Elliott’s imprint, Rossetta Press, produces stories that are culturally specific and organic—not forced through a filter in order to be labeled "universal". Diverse books can foster cross-cultural understanding at an early age. At a moment when 75 percent of whites have no friends of color, and public schools are rapidly "resegregating", the need for diverse children’s literature is greater than ever.

Herb Klitzner tells us about what’s coming up in the robot world. Social robots are designed to engage with us humans in a collaborative way – like taking over our complex tasks, or simply waiting for us in line. To be effective, these robots need to interact with humans (or other robots) empathically, so empathy needs to be programed into their “consciousness.”
