Over the course of two days, audiences can roam through the studios at the former army warehouse turned LMCC’s Arts Center, and experience a variety of in-progress and completed visual, literary, and performing art works. There will be painting, sketch, new media, writing, theater, dance and performance art projects sure to inspire new ideas and perspectives, providing an avenue for artists and audiences to engage in dialogue. Permaculture expert Claudia Joseph leads a workshop aboard the Swale on the practice’s philosophy and techniques. Joseph, founder and Director of the NY Permaculture Exchange, is a permaculture teacher, consultant and community gardener. As the Director of Environmental Programs at the Old Stone House she has designed and installed a permanent useful landscape with students, apprentices and volunteers as well as the programs and events that promote community sustainability. Join her for a workshop that will teach you to take the practice of permaculture to your home landscape and wherever you go. Swale is devoted to rethinking New York City’s connection to our needs for sustenance. Built on a 130-foot by 40-foot floating platform, Swale contains an edible forest garden. Functioning as both a sculpture and a tool, Swale provides free healthy food at the intersection of public art and service. With Swale, the creators want to reinforce water as a commons, and work towards fresh food as a commons too.

Morningside Lights is an arts event led by the directors of Processional Arts Workshop, Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles and produced by Columbia University's Arts Initiative and Miller Theatre. A week of workshops will culminate in an illuminated procession of public art in the park .
