Workshop | Body Positive Conversation

As women, we're trained from an early age to bond with others over our hatred of our bodies, and/or various different parts of our bodies. We’re taught to believe that loving our body as it is, is inappropriate. We’re taught that our body should look and be a certain way, in accord with socio-cultural standards. Time has come to change this pattern and begin a positive conversation about our body. In this workshop, Dr. Baker will guide you through a simple exercise that will begin a positive body image conversation. Of course, you will be invited to join in the discussion and share your thoughts and opinions with the group.

From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Workshop | Adult Sampler: Fall 2016

Featuring American Realness performances, pop-up exhibition by Beverly’s, free arts workshops, adult beverages, and snacks. Featured workshops include: UNSUITABLE FOODS: PERFORMATIVE COOKING AND DINING - How do Renaissance dinner party gags connect to the avant-garde recipes of the Futurist Cookbook, artist-run restaurants like Gordon Matta-Clark and Carol Godden’s FOOD, and the glow of a florescent jello mold? Discuss artists’ interpretations of food ranging from celebrations of whimsy and wealth to social critique, and back again. Then, put your research into action, staging our own performative dinner party. Learn how to plan, prep, execute, style, and serve an unorthodox dish or cocktail of your own invention, and (this is key) how to convince your guests to try it. No actual cooking skills required. CHORAL MARX - This is a class that is also a chorus. We will encounter pivotal political and theoretical texts written by Karl Marx through a variety of experiments in collective reading and singing. Paying special attention to the contemporary significance of Marx for anti-racist, anti-misogynist, anti-heterosexist, and anti-imperialist struggles, we will sound-out Marx in the present through a series of reading assignments and original choral music. No prior training in political economy or vocal performance is necessary.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Emeka Ogboh

Emeka Ogboh transforms the exhibition space into a branding zone for a Berlin beer called Sufferhead Original. Drawing upon a lecture by a leading figure in a German rightwing populist party, who referred to a “life-affirming African mode of propagation” and contrasted African and European reproductive strategies, Ogboh imagines a scenario in which a beer that tastes ‘like home’ to members of the African diaspora takes over the German capital and its beer culture. An infomercial recounts how a black stout brewed by the artist himself subverts the German beer purity law—the so-called ‘Reinheitsgebot’—and becomes so popular in Berlin that it supersedes all other beer brands. A jingle pays an Afrobeat-inspired, Lagos-Berlin tribute to Fela Kuti’s track “Original Suffer Head”, which talks about the economic and political situation in Nigeria in the 1980s, a decade of mass emigration. Questions emerge from the opaque Sufferhead Original beer bottles with their tattoo-style labels: Is the ‘sufferhead’ the result of drinking this spicy beer with high alcohol content? Or might it be related to the complex experiences of migration? Or is it due to the mere fact that Sufferhead Original is the only beer left in Berlin’s bars and stores? Das Afrikanische Bierlaboratorium I stages and swirls investigations, projections, and debates about immigration, blackness, food, and community culture in Berlin and lets them resonate in the city of New York.

In the words of the composer: “This Requiem was originally written for the 3000 victims of 9/11. Then, in early 2003 the prolonged and intense bombing of Baghdad claimed the lives of tens of thousands. I dedicate this work to the innocent victims of both bombings. Finding Walt Whitman’s poetry was a powerful reminder that the tragedies of war and destruction can return; that the human impulse to reach out and help in times of sorrow is universal, and that the great Force that gives life persists and sustains us continually.”

Discussion | The Kindred Talks: What Precedes War, and What Follows In Its Path?

The Kindred Talks explores the links between arts and activism on the complex topics raised by MAPP International's productions, such as climate change, immigration, and more. These public forums gather artists and activists whose work shares a common theme of urgent meaning to us all—as individuals and as a community. What Precedes War, and What Follows In Its Path? is a conversation with four creators whose projects reflect the pre- and post-wartime culture of loss, destabilization, and violence: Iraqi-born artist Wafaa Bilal; Peruvian-born photographer Milagros de la Torre; writer, director, actor, and theater puppet artist Dan Hurlin; and Japanese-born U.S. playwright and theater artist Chiroi Miyagawa. Moderated by journalist and author Chris Hedges.

Video | The Sickness Is the Cure: Video Works

The Sickness is the Cure is a program of selected video works that engage the process of healing beyond the mandates of curative care. Biomedicine defines illness and trauma as a deviation from a normative body, designating upon bodies the necessity of recuperation. The cure is a definitive process: debts are paid; equilibrium is restored. In contrast, alternative healing modalities understand illness to be a mode of communication, a message from the interior about the exterior, and vice versa. Healing disavows the linearity of the cure. It relies on a subjective assessment whereas the cure relies on an external framework. The healing process is endless. The body and its environment are in constant flux. There is no original state to return to. Through these video works, healing emerges as a multivalent process: personal and collective, spiritual and biological, humorous and somber.
