The goddess, it seems, is unavailable and they are forced to rely on the help of the elderly but wealthy Daemones and his impudent slave Sceparnio. Adapted by Peter Oswald from a lost Greek play by Plautus, The Storm was one of the most popular comedies of ancient Rome. Takes place Sep. 13 and 15-17.

Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Sara Conklin / Minako Ito

Conklin's newest series revisits one of her favorite subjects: the structure of the house and home, physically, emotionally and psychologically. Recognizable objects, like houses, and their environments take on new meaning in unnatural settings. Conklin creates psychological tension. Houses are on the verge of destruction or pending doom. They are spewing water or are oddly perched on natural terrain. Layered ephemeral media such as personal wallpaper, visual memories of structures lived and abandoned in one's past...create Conklin's dramatic narratives. We are reminded that nothing is ever totally new. Remains of the past... are even at very least a subliminal part of the present and a hint of the future. In this exhibition of colorful lithographs, Ito presents the moments and pleasure of daily life through her memorable landscapes and objects. These prints welcome the viewer into her world.

Marie Lorenz (b. 1973, United States) is a New York-based artist whose practice involves using the tide to navigate the waterways of New York City in wooden boats she builds by hand. For her ongoing project, titled Tide and Current Taxi, the artist takes a variety of participants on boat trips exploring the shorelines of the city. For the High Line, Lorenz installs three rowboats on the underside of the park at Gansevoort Plaza, which the artist periodically lowers, in order to take visitors on boat rides on the Hudson River. This program is part of Wanderlust, a group exhibition that explores the themes of walking, journeys, and pilgrimages. Takes place Sep. 15 and Oct. 8.

Opening Reception | Roxy Paine's Thermoplastic Flux: Works on Paper

Roxy Paine's substantial body of work spans the monumental and the microscopic - from the organic tones of nature to the cold, clean lines of the machine world. Critically, however, his works never rest in one of these spheres, but rather fuse them together to create pieces which confound, provoke, demonstrate and question all at once. Through grappling with events of nature and industry, control and chaos, Paine’s work highlights a perpetual irresolution of these altered realities and how we experience the world around us. Paine continues to reinvent and challenge the relationship between idea and material translation.

The International Contemporary Ensemble, described by the New York Times as “one of the most accomplished and adventurous groups in new music,” has premiered over 500 compositions, mostly by emerging composers - since its founding in 2001. In an effort to reshape the way that music is created and shared, ICE is striving to create a radically accessible online archive, where composers, performers, and audiences can discover new works, and share their thoughts about how music is composed, performed, and heard. ICE comes to the Library, seeking your help with this revolutionary archive. Join them for a series of interactive concerts, where ICE collects your responses to world premiere performances of music by trailblazing composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir (b. 1977).

But that short-term convenience comes with long-term costs to the environment and our health. Journalist Susan Freinkel, author of Plastic: A Toxic Love Story, talks about how the rise of plastic helped create a culture of convenience and how to live with the disposables we can’t seem to do without.

Play | Welcome to Thebes: Inspired by Ancient Greek Myth

By Moira Buffini. Faced with an impoverished population, a shattered infrastructure and a volatile army, the first democratic president of Thebes, Eurydice, promises peace to her nation. Without the aid of Theseus, the leader of the vastly wealthy state of Athens, she doesn't stand a chance. But Theseus is arrogant, mercurial and motivated by profit. A swaggering opposition circles, impatient for insurrection. The body of the former dictator lies unburied. Set in the present day but inspired by ancient myth, Welcome to Thebes offers a passionate exploration of an encounter between the world's richest and the world's poorest countries in the aftermath of a brutal war. Takes place Sep. 14-17.

Author Reading | Dave Barry discusses his book Best. State. Ever.: A Florida Man Defends His Homeland

Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from someone wanting to know, "What the hell is wrong with Florida?" The state's acquired an image as a festival of stupid and as a loyal Floridian, he begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. And there's bugs the size of basketballs. But it's a great state, from the Sunshine State's earliest history to the fun-fair of weirdness that it is today.

Concert | Downtown Comes Uptown Concert

Featuring The Marcus King Band, Ruby Amanfu, BAILEN, and Alice Phoebe Lou. The Marcus King Band Songwriter. Guitarist. Singer. Bandleader. At only 20 years of age, Marcus King’s dazzling musical ability is evident throughout The Marcus King Band, the young phenom’s second full-length LP and first for Fantasy Records. Operating within the fiery brand of American roots music that King calls "soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock," the album highlights King’s gorgeous, rough-hewn vocals, soaring guitar work, and heartfelt songwriting all amidst a group of masterful musicians, who together are quickly becoming one of the country’s most sought-after live acts. Ruby Amanfu Whether on Beyoncé’s new album Lemonade or singing her own songs, Ghana-born and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Ruby Amanfu’s voice is one you only have to hear once to remember forever. After releasing her first solo album, Smoke & Honey, in 2003 (single “Sugah” reached #3 on Billboard's air play charts), Amanfu earned Grammy recognition in 2007 for her co-writing effort on The Duhks’ “Heaven’s My Home.” For her most recent solo album, Standing Still, Amanfu interpreted songs of other writers ranging from Brandi Carlile to Woody Guthrie to Kanye West, and her powerful vocals can be found on collaborations with artists ranging from Beyoncé (“Don’t Hurt Yourself”) to Jack White (“Love Interruption”). Five record deals and two publishing deals later, Amanfu is enjoying creative freedom as she prepares for the release of her next solo album. BAILEN When they’re not touring with jazz virtuoso Raul Midón, or starring on London’s West End in the hit show Close to You; Bacharach Reimagined, 25-year-old twins Daniel (bass) and David Bailen (drums) are playing and singing in three-part harmony with their 19-year-old sister, Julia (guitar), in their band, BAILEN. Childhood friend Pierre Piscitelli (keyboards) is the fourth member of BAILEN, and the only “non” Bailen, but the band says they are working on the paperwork. Alice Phoebe Lou Alice Phoebe Lou has an artistic confidence that belies her youth; her honest storytelling, vagabond spirit, and beautiful voice have caught the ears of music lovers the world over. Lou grew up in South Africa, which indulged her love of arts and music. After finishing school, Alice’s path led to Berlin. Lou busked around Berlin with just her guitar and a small amplifier, and her talent quickly garnered a cult following. The creative community there helped Lou grow musically, and she collaborated with many musicians, including multi-instrumentalist Matteo who became Lou’s performance companion. 2016 sees Lou release her first studio album.
