Opening Reception | New Paintings by Gang Zhao

Gang Zhao was an early participant in the controversial avant-garde Stars Group that showed in Beijing in the 1970s when the artist was still less than twenty years old. Educated in Holland and the United States, Zhao's work combines both Eastern and Western influences and encompasses elements and sensibilities from both worlds to explore his world view. Zhao has continued to paint increasingly poignant figurative works that are at once lyrical and based on intellectual roots. Zhao was born in Peking, China in 1961. He lived for over twenty years in the United States, moving back to Beijing in 2006. He attended the State Academy of Fine Art, Maastricht, Holland, and Vassar and Bard Colleges. He has exhibited widely in China and Europe as well as in the US. Film | People on Sunday: An Early Collaboration of Famous German Filmmakers

People on Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag) represents an astonishing confluence of talent—an early collaboration by a group of German filmmakers who would all go on to become major Hollywood players, including eventual noir masters Robert Siodmak (The Killers, Criss Cross) and Edgar G. Ulmer (Detour, Bluebeard) and future Oscar winners Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard, Ace in the Hole) and Fred Zinneman (High Noon, A Man for All Seasons). This effervescent, sunlit silent film, about a handful of city dwellers enjoying a weekend outing (a charming cast of nonprofessionals), offers a rare glimpse of Weimar-era Berlin. A unique hybrid of documentary and fictional storytelling, People on Sunday was both an experiment and a mainstream hit that would influence generations of film artists around the world. With remarks by Noah Isenberg.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Told and Untold: The Photo Stories of Kati Horna in the Illustrated Press

This show features the work of Kati Horna (born Katalin Deutsch, Budapest, 1912 – Mexico City, 2000), who in the early twentieth century was among very few women to photograph the frontlines of war. Her images of the Spanish Civil War appeared in numerous anarchist publications. However, following General Francisco Franco’s victory, Horna and her husband, Spanish artist José Horna, fled to Mexico, where she began a lifelong engagement with the Mexican illustrated press. Her work focused on landmarks of modern Mexican architecture and daring portraits of artists and cultural figures of the time. The exhibition will include a selection of photographs, some of which have never been shown before, displayed alongside the periodicals that put them in circulation.

Discussion | What We See: Stories from the Global Refugee Crisis

Join Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) for an engaging discussion to mark the launch of the Forced From Home exhibition. Using a combination of first-hand field experience and top-level insight, the speakers discuss some of the most pressing needs of refugees and internally-displaced persons (IDPs) in MSF's projects around the world, and explain why this is the time to focus attention on this important and pressing issue. MSF Executive Director Jason Cone explain why it is vitally important that MSF speak out now, and aid workers share stories of how displacement has affected their patients in places like South Sudan and the Middle East. Plus, the Mayor’s commissioner for immigrant affairs will bring the discussion back home: how is the impact of this crisis seen in New York City? A Q+A will follow the discussion. Panelists: Jason Cone, MSF-USA Executive Director. Commissioner Nisha Agarwal, Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs. Dr. Africa Stewart, OBGYN and Forced From Home tour guide. Dr. Stewart has completed four assignments with MSF, in South Sudan and Nigeria. Michelle Mays, nurse and project coordinator for MSF programs in Nigeria, Jordan, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, and India. Opening remarks by Professor Miriam Ticktin, Associate Professor of anthropology and co-director of Zolberg Institute for Migration and Mobility.
