Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Author Reading | Haley Sweetland Edwards discusses her book Shadow Courts

Arbitration tribunals are buried in thousands of trade treaties, linking more than 179 countries. Called Investor-State Dispute Settlements, or ISDS, these tribunals allow private corporations to sue sovereign nations if they believe terms of a treaty were violated. In 2010, tobacco giant Philip Morris International used arbitration tribunals to sue Sierra Leone and Uruguay for putting health-warning labels on cigarette packages, and it has gone on to file suits against Australia and the European Union. Time correspondent Haley Sweetland Edwards goes behind the scenes to tell the story of the most outrageous recent arbitration cases, and takes a hard look at the power these shadow courts hold over the world.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Charlotte Moorman: Don’t Throw Anything Out

Don’t Throw Anything Out will frame the scope of the Charlotte Moorman Archive with a selection of objects and media ranging from her double-barreled, heavily notated Rolodex to audio recordings of greetings and voice messages saved from her telephone message machine, both by personal relations, including her mother, and by such legends of the era as John Lennon. While A Feast of Astonishments traces Moorman’s achievements and influence within the broad context of the art and culture of her time, Don’t Throw Anything Out provides a look at the private Moorman, the Southern belle who rather implausibly became an instigator and ambassador for vanguard art.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Ginny Casey's Play Things

"Eyes peek out from under the lid of a jar. Bulging pots rest on tabletops, suggestively prodded and pinched by disembodied hands in gangrenous tones of blue, green, and purple. The handle of a hammer bends, as if made of flesh. Brushy, soaked-in, sanded-down paint imbues the mottled light and eccentric forms with a subaquatic softness." This excerpt comes from a review in The New Yorker of Ginny Casey's Ghost Maker exhibition at 106 Green last winter. Casey will be making her inaugural Manhattan debut. This summer Casey exhibited in two group shows; Fathoms at Radical Abacus in Santa Fe and NURTURE/Nature at DC Moore Gallery curated by Carrie Moyer. Ginny Casey received her MFA from RISD in 2008. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

Author Reading | Jane Ziegelman and Andrew Coe discuss their book A Square Meal: A Culinary History of the Great Depression

An in-depth exploration of the greatest food crisis the nation has ever faced—the Great Depression—and how it transformed America’s culinary culture. Before 1929, America’s relationship with food was defined by abundance, but the collapse of the economy, in both urban and rural America, left a quarter of all Americans out of work and undernourished. New York was the first state to offer relief and in turn was influential in shaping national food policy. Join Ziegelman and Coe in conversation about this formative time in our food culture and taste dishes from the era, such as lima bean loaf.
