Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | Easy Money and Respectable Girls: Neoliberalism and Expectation in the US Virgin Islands

In St. Croix, a disproportionate number of young women from middle and upper-middle class backgrounds are hired to work within the Economic Development Commission, an initiative that grants tax incentives to businesses based in the US Virgin Islands. In this lecture, Associate Director Tami Navarro examines questions of gender, racial inequality, and widening class divisions by looking at the competing expectations workers face from their employers and their local communities. Through the EDC program, neoliberal expectations of privatization (of property, of identity, of spending decisions) clash with community demands for solidarity and more equitable dispersal of EDC capital – widely understood as circulating through exclusionary networks of wealth.

Lecture | The Jewish Presence and Absence in the Theater of Tadeusz Kantor

Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990) was once called "the best artist of the world from amongst Polish artists and the most Polish one from amongst artists of the world." Parallel to this characterization, Kantor's works, staged in New York at La Mama, E.T.C. during the author’s lifetime, bear an overwhelming Jewish presence — from Purim groggers and Chasidic melodies, to a rabbi saying kaddish and Jews with arm bands facing annihilation, though it is not clear to what extent Kantor identified as Jewish. He said of his own background, "I think that there were some Jewish family origins, which for me are not essential. What is essential in my opinion, is that Jewish culture has a colossal meaning for Polish culture." Presenter David A. Goldfarb has served as Curator of Literature and Humanities at the Polish Cultural Institute New York, and has taught at Barnard College. He has published on Polish and Russian literature in a range of academic journals and anthologies, wrote the introduction to the Penguin Classics edition of “The Street of Crocodiles” and Other Stories by Bruno Schulz, and is currently writing about Bruno Schulz.
