Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to city markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the city to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Film | Documentary: Arun Wolf's Between Memory and Museum (2015)

Between Memory and Museum, a book and a film, is a reflection on the museum as an institution that preserves, creates and disseminates knowledge by 38 folk and tribal artists from across India. The project was initiated by Tara Books, an independent publisher of illustrated books for children and adults based in Chennai, India, which has a 20-year history of working with indigenous artists to invite them to the form of the book as authors and illustrators rather than as anthropological subjects. These artists come from long traditions of floor painting, mural making, and tattoo art that have then migrated to paper and canvas. Filmmaker Arun Wolf will introduce the film and the project.

Discussion | Net Lit Unlimited: A Discussion on the Limits and Un-limits of Sharing Literature on the Net

How has the way we present literature on the net changed over the past decade? Has it become more or less inclusive, more or less global? Are we getting a more diverse picture or is literature being reduced to listicles? If a website can reach anyone, anywhere, at any time, who are our audiences? What are literary websites in the States and Germany doing to draw in and involve those readers? And will it change the world? Words without Borders is in its thirteenth year of bringing readers literature in translation from all over the globe, while The Offing is a brand new venture hosting original writing in English alongside a selection of translations. In Germany, meanwhile, most literary magazines have yet to embrace the internet to the fullest, to put it mildly. Is that skepticism wise or are German readers and writers missing out as a result? What has the expansion of writing and criticism to the net brought readers other than seemingly never-ending choice? Has it helped writers otherwise marginalized in the literary conversation to reach audiences? And what does the net offer fans of international fiction for the future? Join Eric M. B. Becker from Words without Borders, Geoff Mak from The Offing, and translator and love german books blogger Katy Derbyshire, fresh off the boat from Berlin, for a discussion on the limits and un-limits of sharing literature on the net.

Poetry Reading | Wayne Koestenbaum reads from his book The Pink Trance Notebooks

A sequence of 34 intimate epigrammatic assemblages, The Pink Trance Notebooks is the product of the year Koestenbaum stopped keeping the traditional journal he had maintained for three decades and embarked instead on a series of “trance notebooks” as a way to transform his diary into a higher pitch of reckless ceremony, an occasion for intensified, unmoored consciousness. To mark the book’s publication, and to manifest the spirit of linguistic improvisation, Koestenbaum will perform piano miniatures (Scriabin, Chopin, Fauré, Milhaud, Poulenc) while incanting spontaneous Sprechstimme-style soliloquies.
