Tour | Explore Castle Williams Tour


Castle Williams, the centerpiece of the system of fortifications designed to guard New York City just prior to the War of 1812, has long been off-limits to the public. After an extensive rehabilitation project in 2011, the National Park Service opened the Castle's to the general public for the first time in the fort's 200-year history. Tours of the Castle take visitors through all three levels and the roof. Tours are approximately 30 minutes in length. Visitors are advised that tours require climbing three flights of stairs. The Castle's upper floors are not handicap-accessible. Start times: 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm.

Help NYPL build the geospatial library of the future! This workshop will get you oriented with the set of tools the Library has developed that enables librarians and the general public to add valuable geographic context to old maps by overlaying digital images of historical maps onto a contemporary digital map through a process called georectification, or "warping" maps. This means overlaying digital images of historic maps onto a contemporary digital map (similar to Google Maps), transforming them into tiles of a virtual atlas.

Jazz | Jazz: The David Smith Quintet / The Mark Wade Trio


New Music Horizons, a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to promoting the work of emerging jazz and classical composers, will present a free concert. This concert will feature the work of two jazz composers, David Smith and Mark Wade. The program will include a pre-concert talk by the composers in which they will discuss examples of the music that their ensembles will perform; a performance of the music; and an informal post-concert audience Q&A session where people can talk with the artists about what they heard and experienced. Audience members will have the unique opportunity to meet a living composer and learn about the music directly from the artist. The David Smith Quintet features David Smith on trumpet, Dan Pratt on saxophones, Nate Radley on guitar, Gary Wang on acoustic bass, and Anthony Pinciotti on drums. The Mark Wade Trio features Tim Harrison on piano, Mark Wade on acoustic bass, and Anthony Pinciotti on drums.
