Incorporating 3,466 blocks from all fifty states and several international countries, it has been on continuous view at the American Folk Art Museum since 2002. Lee Kogan will discuss the powerful and poignant quilt within the context of America's long tradition of quilts of conscience, quilts that have been created to express the quiltmaker's views on pressing political, social, and environmental issues. Please note: a facsimile of the National Tribute Quilt will be on view for this program, as the quilt will be on view at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Boca Raton, Florida, as part of the traveling exhibition Politics NOT as Usual: Quilts with Something to Say.

Concert | 2nd Annual Park Folk Festival

For the second year, the Folk Festival will bring 12 musical acts back to the heart of New York City’s legendary 1960s folk music scene. Hosted by festival founder Eli Smith of Down Home Radio Show and the Brooklyn Folk Festival, the two-day event will showcase the talents of local and national bands playing a variety of Appalachian string band music, hot jazz, bluegrass, Americana, blues, and originals by singer songwriters. Featured performers include: the celebrated American folk music duo, Ginny Hawker and Tracy Schwarz, who will take the stage directly after his former New Lost City Ramblers bandmate, John Cohen — who he performed with in Washington Square Park more than four decades ago. Cohen will be playing with a new old-time string band composed of Eli Smith, Walker Shepard, and Jackson Lynch; one of the most talented multi-instrumentalists in the New York City blues scene, Blind Boy Paxton; the accomplished acoustic guitarist and singer Mamie Minch, with a voice and sensibility well beyond her years; the spirited wife-husband duo, Piedmont Bluz; and folksinger Randy Burns, who joins the festival lineup 46 years after he was dropped off on the corner of Bleecker and MacDougal Street with a guitar in his hand.

Tour | Public Art Tour: The Irish Hunger Memorial

Join poet Jonathan Curley and contemporary art historian Dorothea Basile on a fascinating “walking conversation” of the Irish Hunger Memorial, the stunning public art installation by Brian Tolle that replicates the rolling hills and grassy knolls of the Irish Countryside on the banks of the Hudson River. The memorial designed to raise public awareness of the events that lead to the famine of 1845-52 and, without losing its focus as commemorative art, to address current world events. Basile and Curley will guide participants in an exploration of the work, placing it in the larger context of memorial art and considering the many issues that need to be addressed in creating such work.

Theater | Street Theater: Theater for the New City's 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company opens its 36th annual tour with 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us, a rip-roaring musical which will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds. The production will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field (it's in-progress as of this writing) and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. TNC's award-winning Street Theater always contains an elaborate assemblage of trap doors, giant puppets, smoke machines, masks, original choreography and a huge (9' x 12') running screen or "cranky" providing continuous movement behind the actors. The company of 27 actors, twelve crew members, two assistant directors and five live musicians shares the challenge of performing outside and holding a large, non-captive audience. The music varies in style from Bossa Nova to Gilbert & Sullivan. Complex social issues are often presented through children's allegories, with children as the heroes, making these free productions a popular form of family entertainment.

Discussion | Rethinking the Imprint of Judson Dance Theater Fifty Years Later

As part of the ongoing 50th anniversary of Judson Dance Theater, join a participatory discussion that will help shape Movement Research's fall residency. They've reached out to various members of the performance community to draft questions regarding the continuing influence and repercussions of Judson Dance Theater on contemporary dance and performance artists working today. At this event, moderated by Carla Peterson, participants will work collectively to shape, refine and select four specific questions or issues that will be addressed through four week-long residencies. At the conclusion of the event, those present will nominate specific artists to tackle the questions selected. Movement Research and the museum will put together a selection committee comprised of artists and organizers charged with selecting four artists for these residencies from those suggested. These artists will receive one week of free rehearsal space at the museum, which will include open rehearsals and public engagement with museum visitors, and a $500 research stipend. The entire Movement Research residency period will culminate in a final presentation/sharing of each artist's research followed by a moderated discussion.
