Detroit and New York are both iconic American cities with long histories of tension at the intersections of race and class, labor and capital. Lecture | George Romney, Republican: The Rise and Fall of Mitt's Political Mentor

From his 1962 election as Michigan governor until he withdrew two weeks before the 1968 New Hampshire primary, George Romney was a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. But the successful auto executive who got into politics preaching nonpartisan citizen participation was overwhelmed by his inconsistencies and antagonized Republican colleagues--both conservative and liberal. Going beyond his "brainwashing" gaffe, author John R. Bohrer explores the political biography of the first Romney to run for president.

Opening Reception | MinMax: Minimalist Themes in a Maximalist Collection

As reflected in his long association with Abstract Expressionism, Allan Stone was best known as a proponent of gestural bravado and material gravitas. This exhibition reveals a less familiar side of his taste: artists working in minimal, reductive and geometric themes. Though Stone often referred to himself as a "maximalist," he also demonstrated an eye for elemental statements, having shown artists like Barnett Newman, Robert Ryman and Eva Hesse as early as 1962. This exhibition includes artists currently represented by the gallery as well as artists from the gallery’s 50-year history.

Opening Reception | Installation: Mr.'s Metamorphosis: Give Me Your Wings

The centerpiece of Mr.'s exhibition is a massive installation to be constructed in the middle of the main gallery and interspersed with a series of new paintings. This sprawling installation, the first of it’s kind by the artist outside of Japan, embodies the post-disaster angst and frustration of the Japanese people since the catastrophic events of March 11, 2011. According to the artist, the Japanese people rose in a unified effort to recover from the devastation of the loss of World War II. But along with the recent economic stagnation, the earthquakes in Eastern Japan, and the after effects of the nuclear disaster, a collective depression from an inability to vent their frustrations continues to accumulate within their society.

Workshop | Intro Class: Mantra & Meditation

With Thomas Amelio. Many of us long to make deep and lasting change in our lives, but often try to do so from a viewpoint that is itself the problem. Meditation can help us make a lasting shift into a new consciousness altogether. Mantras are powerful and ancient sound-vibration formulas that de-clutter the mind and transform our bodies, minds and spirits in profound ways. In this class, you will learn and experience some of the meditation and mantra practices of the esoteric yoga tradition: basic awareness and breath meditation; self-inquiry (atma vichara); mantra japa meditation; bij (seed) mantras; shakti (power) mantras, and more. Meditation and mantra aim to purify our bodies and souls of kleshas (obstacles), so that our true nature as satchidananda (truth/consciousness/joy) can shine ever brighter.

The story of the first African Americans to integrate the white high school in Batesville, Mississippi in 1967-69. In 2005, the Black alumni received an invitation to their class reunion—for the first time in 40 years. By interspersing separate group discussions among black and white alumni with a dialogue between both groups, the film provides a moving story of the impact of desegregation, then and now. 40 Years Later raises questions essential to interracial dialogue and renews a commitment to addressing ongoing racial segregation today. Slide Lecture | Stephen J. Schulhofer discusses his book More Essential than Ever: The Fourth Amendment in the Twenty First Century

The Fourth Amendment requires that government respect the right of citizens to be "secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures". The legal expert offers a rich account of the history and nuances of Fourth Amendment protections, as he examines such issues as street stops, racial profiling, electronic surveillance, data aggregation, and the demands of national security. The Fourth Amendment explicitly authorizes invasions of privacy--but it requires justification and accountability, requirements that reconcile public safety with liberty. Today, the Fourth Amendment remains more essential than ever.

Also, a public art street intervention by Hirsch is featured throughout Fall 2012 in downtown Liverpool, UK, as part of the Liverpool Biennal 2012. Oded Hirsch makes short films that are based on communal collaborations. For his projects he invites hundreds of people to take an active part in the production and artistic process of his filmic performances. In the past five years he has been working on a film trilogy that depicts intense devotion of settlers in peripheral villages, and who engage in pointless acts of futile toil. Christian Meyer — Director of the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna — will give a talk about Schoenberg and the idea of the avant-garde. Using musical examples, recordings, and improvisations with jazz trumpeter Franz Hackl, Meyer’s hybrid presentation-performance explores the musical and philosophical terrain laid out by Schoenberg in celebration of the composer’s birthday and to mark the opening of Moving Sounds 2012.
