Conference | Comradely Objects: Art Against Reification

The Soviet avant-garde occupies a prominent place in the history and historiography of modern art. A subject of extensive discussion in its own right, it has also figured consistently in analyses of the relationship between the historical and postwar neo-avant-gardes. Thirty-five years have passed since the editors of October named their journal after the 1917 October Revolution, “that moment in our century when revolutionary practice, theoretical inquiry and artistic innovation were joined in a manner exemplary and unique.” However, many of the concrete implications of the Soviet avant-garde’s “exemplary” tactics for more recent artistic practice have yet to be charted. The conference will be organized into three parts. Two opening presentations provide the historical and theoretical ground for the discussion, placing the aims and strategies of Productivism in dialogue with recent efforts to theoretize object agency. They are followed by three conversations between artists and scholars or curators, exploring how things might be made to inhabit the various roles of Companion, Mediator, and Organizer. Art historian Michelle Kuo concludes the conference and reflects on the meaning, relevance, and political potential of efforts to reimagine industrially mass-produced objects for a post-industrial age.

Theater | Street Theater: Theater for the New City's 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company opens its 36th annual tour with 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us, a rip-roaring musical which will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds. The production will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field (it's in-progress as of this writing) and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. TNC's award-winning Street Theater always contains an elaborate assemblage of trap doors, giant puppets, smoke machines, masks, original choreography and a huge (9' x 12') running screen or "cranky" providing continuous movement behind the actors. The company of 27 actors, twelve crew members, two assistant directors and five live musicians shares the challenge of performing outside and holding a large, non-captive audience. The music varies in style from Bossa Nova to Gilbert & Sullivan. Complex social issues are often presented through children's allegories, with children as the heroes, making these free productions a popular form of family entertainment.

Opening Reception | Painting: Mark Mastroianni's Natural Wisdom

Mastroianni returns to his unique gessoed tarpaper and mixed media paintings he had begun working with twenty years ago. The once abstract qualities in his work have now shifted toward a representational clarity and yet, Mastroianni continues to convey what he has always evoked so extraordinarily well: the soul of our objective world. Performance | Comedy: Yes, Yes, Yes…And

Yes, Yes, Yes… And! is a scandalous night of down-right-sexy improv. Some of the PIT’s most incorrigible performers team up to turn down the lights, slip into something a little more comfortable, and spend the good part of an hour tickling your funny boners. Beware of partial nudity, strong sexual themes, and the possibility to be dragged on stage for a not-so-wholesome game of Truth or Dare. This show is NOT for the faint-of-heart.
