Lecture | The Promise of Peer Review

In today’s networked digital environment, is the peer review system the best way to recognize quality research and scholarship? Featured speaker Dr. Vivian Siegel, Research Professor of Medicine and Cell and Developmental Biology at Vanderbilt University, will help us find out. Scholars have come to rely on peer review to ensure that the research they publish is valid—that the conclusions are justified by the data and that the ideas presented are new and important. However, peer review requires unbiased experts—people in the same field as the author who can support the publication of research that meets these criteria. Is there really such a thing as an unbiased expert? Does peer review need fixing? And if so, how should changes to the system be evaluated?

Symposium | Escape to Life: German Intellectuals in New York

Planned to take place 65 years after the end of World War II, this symposium is intended to present a series of portraits to a wider audience. In New York, the US gave shelter to a large number of leading intellectuals from the German-speaking world, saving their lives in most of the cases. These public figures either stayed in New York where most of them arrived or moved on to California or other places like Princeton. Some of them - Brecht, Mann, and Horkheimer, for example - returned to Europe soon after 1945. The lectures of this symposium are meant to explore the impact the US, and New York, had on these authors/artists, and on their work. The speakers are also invited to analyze the influence these intellectuals had on American culture and the transformations which happened to their thoughts when translating them into another language, culture, and intellectual arena and addressing them to the American audience. Finally the symposium will discuss how those who returned passed on the American experience to Europe. The speakers may feel completely free to choose the specific angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) they regard as elucidating. The conference is accompanied by an exhibition of portraits by Fred Stein.

Discussion | A Conversation about Comedy and Politics

Comedy and politics have gone together for a long time, and in this age, political comedy is everywhere. We have reached a point where instead of just mocking the news, the comedian Jon Stewart was ranked as America’s most trusted news source by particpants in a Time online poll. How does comedy influence politics? Do jokes about politicians create their image, or just reflect what people already believe? Does political comedy lead people to be more critical of politicians or just more cynical? Join this conversation about the influence of comedy on politics. This event will feature The Gregory Brothers, from YouTube and Barely Political fame for their Auto-Tune the News videos; Baratunde, the web editor of The Onion and co-founder of the blog Jack & Jill Politics; Dan Powell from Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans; and Steve Almond, author of My Life in Heavy Metal and Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life.

Discussion | Artist Julian Schnabel discusses his book Polaroids

The American artist and film director has been taking unique large format Polaroids over the past several years using a 20x24 inch Land camera made in the 1970s. The photographs reveal a poetic that has to do with day to day life of being an artist; some pictures are of family, friends, workplace, painting outside, and things he built or just noticed. They record the transformation of life into art and then art into life. Schnabel and curator Petra Giloy-Hirtz discuss his work and the formation of the book.

Author Reading | Darin Strauss reads from his book Half a Life

Strauss' memoir is a longer look at a story he first told for This American Life, about hitting and killing a classmate in his father's Oldsmobile, and the darker changes his own life took afterward. More than just a memoir, it's an examination of the accidental and intentional and what it means to have killed and lived, particularly now that Darin is a young father himself. Darin Strauss is a graduate of the New York University creative writing program in fiction, where he was awarded a teaching fellowship. His writing has appeared in GQ, Time Out, and literary journals, among other publications. He spent more than three years researching and writing Chang and Eng, which is his first novel.

Theater | Three Sisters Come and Go: Based on Chekov, Beckett and Kristeva

The Alchemical Theatre presents a tragicomedy that follows the lives of the three archetypal women of Chekhov's plays read through the lens of Beckett's comic take on the existential dilemma, and Julia Kristeva's insight regarding the transformation of despair and loss into joy and acceptance. Discussion | Arts in Mind: Elegies for Our Lost Asylums

A conversation series with top artists ranging across the literary, visual, multi-media and performing arts whose work touches on mental health issues. This conversation is with Christopher Payne and Anna Schuleit. Payne is a photographer based in New York City specializing in the documentation of American's vanishing architecture and industrial landscape. Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals, which includes an essay by Oliver Sacks, is the result of a seven-year exploration of American's vast and largely abandoned state mental institutions. Anna Schuleit is a visual artist who studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design whose early, large-scale installation projects revolved around psychiatric institutions: Habeas Corpus (2000) at Northampton State Hospital, and Bloom (2003) at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
