Symposium | The Medusa Project: Celebrating Le Rire de la méduse by Hélène Cixous

In Le Rire de la Méduse (1975) (translated as The Laugh of the Medusa by Keith and Paula Cohen, 1976 – as well as in some nineteen other languages), Hélène Cixous articulates her notion of “l’écriture féminine” (writing through the body). Her call for women’s coming to writing through a radical restructuring of the patriarchal gaze provided a rallying call for feminist thinkers around the world. Cixous asked women and men to rethink the petrifying Medusa as, rather, joyous and liberating, and to imagine a libidinal economy and thus creativity independent of the need to dominate. Sessions primarily in English. 9:00 a.m. Welcoming remarks: Profs. Emily Apter, Tom Bishop, and Judith Miller (Dept. of French, NYU)
