Conference | Critical Intersections: Reproductive and Economic Justice


This conference, co-sponsored with the New York Women's Foundation, will explore how reproductive justice and women's economic security are inextricably linked and will highlight the work being done in these areas by 17 organizations here in New York. With the leadership predominantly of women of color and young people, these organizations focus on diverse issues within the reproductive justice framework, including immigrant rights, environmental justice, alternatives to violence and incarceration, education, community health, economic justice, labor reform, and HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Seventeen different organizations, all involved in important and innovative work for reproductive justice across NYC, will present on their work, their organizing models, and how they've been able to effect change. The conference will also feature a panel discussion with leaders in the field of reproductive justice research, advocacy, and activism. With speakers from: African Hope Committee; Brooklyn Young Mothers Collective; DAMAYAN Migrant Workers Association; Girls Education & Mentoring Services; Girls for Gender Equity; Love Heals; New York Civil Liberties Union; Red Hook Initiative; RightRides; Sauti Yetu Center for African Women; Sistas on the Rise; SMART; Sylvia Rivera Law Project; Voces Latina; Women's HIV Collaborative; Young Women of Color HIV/AIDS Coalition; and Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice.

A lecture by Elizabeth Dunn of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dunn’s early work focused on economic transformation and regulation in Poland. Her book, Privatizing Poland: Baby Food, Big Business and the Remaking of Labor won the 2005 Orbis Book Prize. In 2005, she was the first non-economist to win the Ed. A Hewett Prize from the National Council on East European and Eurasian Research. Her current work focuses on the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.

Discussion | A Race to the End of the Earth Revisited


Relive the triumph and tragedy of the thrilling race between Norwegian Roald Amundsen and British Royal Navy Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The evening will begin with dramatic readings from the explorers’ journals by Wabash College Theater actors, who will bring to life the teams’ 1,800-mile journeys to the South Pole and back with each side battling extreme weather conditions, starvation, and frostbite while pushing the limits of human endurance. After the readings, a panel featuring modern-day polar adventurers and an Antarctic scientist will discuss the historic race and share unique insights on how it helped shape Antarctic exploration and science today. The panel will include Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen, who captivated millions when they became the first women to ski across Antarctica in 2001, and Felicity Aston, who spent two-and-a-half continuous years in the Antarctic, living and working at Rothera Research Station monitoring ozone depletion and climate on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Discussion | Raya Dunayevskaya Centenary


Raya Dunayevskaya (1910-1987) founded the paper News & Letters and wrote four books on a variety of freedom struggles - particularly focusing on women's liberation and gender bias. Her writings provide the philosophical underpinnings of Marxist-Humanism. Join Franklin Dmitryev of the News & Letters Committee, Paul Geist, musician and social justice activist since World War II, Susan Van Gelder, writer and activist in the women's liberation movement since the early 70's, and union organizer Steve Katz for a celebration and discussion of the work of Dunayevskaya.
