Author Reading | Roberta Brandes Gratz reads from her book The Battle for Gotham: New York in the Shadow of Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs

The titanic clash of wills between Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs in the 1960s and how their dueling perspectives helped to define contemporary urban life is the focus of this illustrated presentation. The acclaimed urbanist challenges the conventional wisdom on how cities authentically regenerate. Through the lens of the clashing visions of post-WWII urban renewal (highway building czar Robert Moses on one side and urbanist/author/activist Jane Jacobs on the other), she examines the fall and remarkable comeback of New York City and demonstrates how this story parallels that of many American cities.
