Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. The tour is every Monday.

Discussion | Mobility and Post Democracy: Right of Refusal

Most rights support active participation in society, but the right of refusal makes a case for non-participation. This event begins with an interactive video game installation, inviting attendees to resist the centripetal pull of the fast-paced city. The implications of video games and other forms of withdrawal and resistance will be discussed by a panel of artists, academics, and curators. By framing resistance as a human right, the right of refusal invokes coordinated action, solidarity, and the law to magnify the political implications of individual decisions. These discussions are particularly relevant as voters in the United States consider their options in the forthcoming presidential elections.

Lecture | Two Forms of Gesture: Aby Warburg and Walter Benjamin

There is a division at the center of gesture. In the first instance gesture can be incorporated within the history of literal gesture. It can be located within the history of rhetoric and linked to the history of physiognomy. With such a setting important points of connection can be traced from Cicero and Quintilian to Aby Warburg. At the same time there is another thinking of gesture. It draws on the work of Walter Benjamin. Here gesture breaks with its reduction to the literal. It becomes what Benjamin describes as a mode of ‘interruption’ (Unterbrechung). However, it is an interruption that occasions. Benjamin describes it as ‘form creating’. The aim of this lecture is to trace the points of intersection and separation between these two conceptions of gesture and their relation to a philosophical thinking of the image within the context created by a number of works central to Renaissance and Early Modern Painting. Lecturer: Andrew Benjamin.
