Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

On occasion of Archtober 2016, the forum provides visitors the opportunity to tour the architectural landmark building in midtown Manhattan. With a width of 7.6 meters and a depth of 25 meters, the 24-story tower with its symmetrical glass façade, Abraham succeeded in producing extraordinary stylistic elements that elude any architectural trend. Discussion | Bending the Future of Preservation

How can we make the historic preservation movement a central tool for building a more just world? Historic preservation often gets criticized for being aesthetically elitist, concerned with celebratory history, and a tool of gentrifiers. But recent efforts within the preservation movement show that storyline to be changing – if it was ever true. Preservationists, including some of the outstanding figures on this panel, are propelling preservation in new directions toward equitable economic development without gentrification, toward uncovering and telling the stories of some of our most difficult places, sites of atrocity and discrimination, and toward making preservation a central force in making environmentally sustainable cities. This roundtable discussion, moderated by Max Page and Marla Miller, takes place almost exactly 50 years after the landmark National Historic Preservation Act was signed by President Johnson in October of 1966. That Act created much of the system of saving old places we know today – the National Register of Historic Places, local and state historic commissions, regulations for rehabilitation. The panelists discuss ways to build a progressive historic preservation movement implementing innovative ideas for the next 50 years of historic preservation.

Author Reading | Laura Wright discusses her book The Vegan Studies Project: Food, Animals, and Gender in the Age of Terror

Join faculty Alice Crary in a dialogue and Q+A session with the author The motivations that lead individuals to go vegan, and the way society at large perceives and talks about them is the theme of The Vegan Studies Project: Food, Animals, and Gender in the Age of Terror. Steeped in critical and literary theory, the book focuses on news, advertising, and popular culture that is very much part of our daily experience. The title itself - meant “in the spirit of play” - suggests a certain proximity of Wright’s work with burgeoning fields of research such as food studies, fat studies, and animal studies. Veganism, which is now very visible in US social and cultural debates about food, health, and the environment, begs for a deeper understanding beyond any easy rebuttal.

Discussion | Lessons of Climate Resilience in New York City

New York City has been a proven leader in long-term sustainability planning, but Hurricane Sandy was a profound wake-up call for all New Yorkers that showed how vulnerable the City was to extreme weather events. NYC's Office of Recovery and Resiliency is charged with leading the City’s efforts to build a stronger, more resilient New York and implementing recommendations laid out in ‘One New York: The Plan for a Strong and just City.’ Where does the city stand now in the implementation of its plan? What else can the city do to be more resilient and protect New Yorkers from the harmful impacts of extreme events? Moderated by the Earth Institute’s Steven Cohen, and featuring Curtis Cravens, George Deodatis, Kate Orff, and Adam Sobel, this panel discussion will focus on how New York City – and other cities like it – can take steps to become stronger and more resilient in the face of climate change. Reception to follow.

Screening | Son of Sam and Delilah: A Short Film by Charles Atlas

Created by pioneering multimedia artist Charles Atlas, Son of Sam and Delilah is “a dark vision of an America where life is cheap and even the moments of tenderness have a life threatening edge.” An amalgam of cross-cut scenes, Son of Sam and Delilah features New York performance luminaries John Kelly (as Delilah), Hapi Phace, Almon Grimsted, Brian Butterick, Anna Levine-Thompson, Casey MacDonald, Lucy Sexton & Anne Iobst (DANCENOISE), and Sunny in the late 1980s through 1991. Atlas explained in 2012: “[Son of Sam and Delilah] was unusual because I had people to help, and I didn’t know where it was going at first. I only realized after I made it what it was about – all my friends who were dying of AIDS.” This evening will conclude with a post-screening discussion with Atlas and Stuart Comer, Chief Curator, Department of Media and Performance Art, Museum of Modern Art.

Social influencers are more than their follower count. Creators. Artists. Filmmakers. Photographers. Entrepreneurs. Hear from social media superstars and the companies that love them. Panelists: Folasade Adeoso is graphic designer, creative, and model. Shruti Ganguly is the co-founder and a partner at Fictionless, a film and video production company that focuses on digital series and branded content, narrative features, documentaries, and TV series with clients such as the United Nations, IMG, Sotheby's, ESPN, GE, Apple, NYU and the like. Born in Korea and raised in various parts of India, she found love for creative expression early on and studied Graphic Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology before moving to New York City to pursue Fashion Design at FIT.
