In conditions of shrinking private liberty and growing public apathy and personal anomie, what is meaningful individuality? How is individual freedom to be thought fruitfully in the face of the threat of surveillance, by the state as well as private actors? What are origins of individual docility, and possible sources of resistance? This conference brings together scholars from various fields to examine in an interdisciplinary discussion the meaning of individuality and individual liberty in today’s society.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Symposium | Platform 2016: Lost and Found

In the first of two long-form conversations contextualizing Platform 2016: Lost and Found, curators Ishmael Houston-Jones and Will Rawls host a discussion of the Platform’s origins in an afternoon interspersed with performance. In search of an intergenerational discussion around artistic influence, portraiture, and performed history, Lost and Found has provided four performers with “dossiers” consisting of images, flyers, biographies, documentation, and other ephemera to explore the act of reconstructing, or responding to, the life, work, and mythology of artists who have passed away. 1:30-2:30pm: LOST: Curating Absence: an overview of Platform 2016: Lost and Found with Ishmael Houston-Jones and Will Rawls moderated by Judy Hussie-Taylor. Curators discuss the late John Bernd and his work as the original impetus for the Platform, and address the evolving curatorial process of the last three years. 2:45pm: “Life Drawing” Response #1: Mariana Valencia responding to the work of Assotto Saint (1957-1994). 3-4pm: FOUND: Feminism, AIDS, and History: Heidi Dorow, Muna Tseng, Lucy Sexton, Eva Yaa Asantewaa, moderated by Marýa Wethers. In her article “Doing Queer Love,” Lisa Deidrich writes about the relationship between feminism and AIDS activism, trying “to think through the ways that the coming together of these two struggles in a particular place and time—New York City in the 1980s—created particular practices that might be effective in other times and places.” This conversation brings together four artists who will discuss their relationships to feminism, queer activism and AIDS activism from the 1980s to the present. 4:15pm: “Life Drawing” Response #2: Raja Feather Kelly responding to the work of Ethyl Eichelberger (1945-1990). 4:30-5pm: Lecture/performance by Darrell Jones. 5:30-6pm: Wrap-Up with Mariana Valencia, Darrell Jones, Raja Feather Kelly, and all panelists.

Concert | Reducing the Tempo to Zero: A New Five-Hour Composition by Ben Vida for Four Vocalists and Electronics

Informed by Morton Feldman’s String Quartet No. 2, the extended performance length of the piece acts to complicate the listeners’ relationship to memory, absorption and attention. The timeline of this piece takes hours to unfurl, which means some audience members may only experience segments of the overall composition; this eliminates basic structural signifiers (like a strict beginning, middle and end) and leaves room for reconsidering how the developmental arc of a composition can function. Please note: audience members may come and go throughout the near five-hour performance.

Talk | Indigenous New York, Curatorially Speaking

The program initiative Indigenous New York declares New York indigenous terrain, and brings together artists, curators, critics and scholars of Native American, First Nations, and indigenous descent along with their non-indigenous peers and colleagues to probe this claim and explore ways to affirm it both locally and in a global context. As indigenous artists, curators, critics, and scholars are increasingly sought-after participants in biennales, exhibitions, conferences, and residencies worldwide, this initiative seeks to provide for a moment of reflection. Part of this initiative, Indigenous New York, Curatorially Speaking, presents key findings of a closed curatorial colloquium that precedes the public event at 4:30pm. The curatorial colloquium examines four key inquiries: indigenous and non-indigenous epistemologies and methodologies; the non-colonial museum; challenges of collaborative curation; the growing indigenization of international art. The ultimate goal of this convening is to provide the opportunity for meaningful exchange between colleagues and to examine how a fuller consideration of indigenous production might reconfigure regimes of thought and practice. Among the presenters are those who guided the colloquium. A festive reception follows their presentations.
