Talk | The Importance (or Not!) of Traditions

Traditions represent the distillation of the wisdom and practices of past generations, and they also can represent the creative practices of today. Traditions can be inspiring and they can be constraining. Wholesome and harmful. Enriching and enervating. Fulfilling and burdensome. We must re-examine and re-assess the old traditions we carry with us and generate new ones for today so as to cultivate a healthy future. Speaker Dr. Richard Koral is a Leader-in-Training beginning his second year of part-time internship. Last year he served his first year of internship with the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County in New Jersey working with Dr. Joseph Chuman.

Opening Reception | New Paintings by Jennifer Guidi

In her newest work, Guidi continues her in depth exploration of ritual and the passing of time, building layers of textural marks upon one another, to produce an optically animated whole. By varying her tools, and staggering the intensity of her marks, Guidi creates palimpsestic pieces that allude to the tapestry of time. Each painting begins with a brushed on black background on top of which lilac paint is scraped, allowing remnants of both the black under painting and weave of the linen to show through. The deliberate and meandering red marks are applied as the final textural layer, completing the structural webs she creates. The disparate layers dissolve into each other and create vivid patterns on the canvas that dramatically change from various vantage points. Jennifer Guidi lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work is in numerous private collections as well as the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles and will be included in the upcoming show 100% at the Rubell Family Collection, Miami.
