Author Reading | Gary Wilder discusses his book Freedom Time: Negritude, Decolonization, and the Future of the World

Gary Wilder's book reconsiders decolonization from the perspectives of Aimé Césaire (Martinique) and Léopold Sédar Senghor (Senegal) who, beginning in 1945, promoted self-determination without state sovereignty. As politicians, public intellectuals, and poets they struggled to transform imperial France into a democratic federation, with former colonies as autonomous members of a transcontinental polity. In so doing, they revitalized past but unrealized political projects and anticipated impossible futures by acting as if they had already arrived.

Rail lines, bridges, highways, waterways, and off-ramps—larger than life but part of it, infrastructural systems are the enduring forms of urban evolution, multiplying as cities grow and requiring expanding swaths of territory to accommodate more and more monofunctional requirements. What if the very hard line between landscape, architecture, engineering, and urbanism could find a more synthetic convergence? Join Marion Weiss, Michael A. Manfredi, Alexandra Lange, Stan Allen, and David van der Leer in a discussion that explores the potential to shape a new public realm.

Lecture | Singing Machines: Karaoke Fascism and Postcoloniality

A talk by Professor Karen Tongson, University of Southern California. A decade ago, the Australian scholar Monique Skidmore published a book, titled Karaoke Fascism: Burma and the Politics of Fear, which used karaoke as a metaphor to describe the “layers of conformity” and the derivative nature of the power forged by the military, dictatorial regimes of Burma in the late twentieth century. This presentation walks us through the origins of the first karaoke machines—in Japan and the Philippines—before asking what it would mean to take a freakish political concept like karaoke fascism literally. More precisely, this presentation explores the role actual karaoke has played in certain fascist regimes in Southeast Asia, namely in the Philippines during Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos’ reign between 1965-1986, and during the Cambodian dictator, Hun Sen’s current dictatorial regime.
