Workshop | Citizen Cartography: Building a Virtual Atlas of New York

Help NYPL build the geospatial library of the future! This workshop will get you oriented with the set of tools the Library has developed that enables librarians and the general public to add valuable geographic context to old maps by overlaying digital images of historical maps onto a contemporary digital map through a process called georectification, or "warping" maps. This means overlaying digital images of historic maps onto a contemporary digital map (similar to Google Maps), transforming them into tiles of a virtual atlas.

Lecture | Of Narcos, Indios and Terrorists: A Racial Geography of the Now

With: Maria Josefina Saldana-Portills, Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis. The narco may appear to be an unprecedented phenomena, one that can be best explained with facts and figures. How many kilos of cocaine crossed into the U.S. border this year? How many mutilated corpses were found along Mexico’s northern border today? This analysis would not be an incorrect, but it would miss the longer historical trajectory of the figure of the narco, as well as the saturated cultural currency of the term on both sides of the border today. In this lecture Professor Saldana-Portills combines an analysis of the political economy of drug trafficking with an analysis of the racial imaginaries in both countries that give the term its power and its malleability in our contemporary moment.

Screening | Scenes through the Cinema Lens: Alfred Hitchcock Looks at You

Most people think of Alfred Hitchcock as the “Master of Suspense,” but the director was concerned with much more than just keeping you on the edge of your seat. What do we make, for example, of all the films in which he made a personal appearance? Sometimes he even looks directly at the audience. Hitchcock had his own personal take on what it means to look, especially at something that we are not supposed to be looking at. Watch crucial scenes from several films in which Hitchcock invites us to join him in his own special brand of voyeurism.
