Lecture | Race and Space: The Politics of Inequality at Brazil's Satellite Launch Center

Contemporary Brazil seems riven by paradoxes. The nation is heralded internationally for its economic growth and reduction in inequality; yet Brazil is also convulsed by conflict over inequality, race, governance, and the national place in global hierarchies. This ethnographic study of the three-decade-old strife that surrounds Brazil's Air Force-controlled spaceport — a hugely ambitious technopolitical undertaking in one of Brazil’s poorest regions — sheds light on how these conflicts have long developed. Speaker Sean T. Mitchell is assistant professor of anthropology at Rutgers University, Newark. His ethnographically-based work focuses on the politics of inequality, particularly in Brazil.

Park Walk | The High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Structured interchange between scholars and organizers has the potential to enrich the work of both groups, providing theoretical, historical, and empirical context to the work of organizers and providing scholars with an understanding of the priority issues that arise within the context of organizing.

Film | Carl Deal's Citizen Koch (2014), a Documentary Censored by PBS

Last year, public television officials pulled $150,000 in funds they had committed to the production of Citizen Koch and cancelled plans for the film's broadcast premiere in fear of losing the financial backing of major PBS donor David Koch, the ultra-conservative billionaire industrialist. Citizen Koch was effectively censored from the public airwaves. But after completing one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns of all time to make up for the lost funds, Citizen Koch will air tonight. The film focuses on one Wisconsin race involving Gov. Scott Walker, heavily financed by the billionaire Koch brothers. When Gov. Walker and his allies stripped away collective bargaining rights of public unions, voters collected a million signatures on petitions to set up an election to recall Walker mid-term. Citizen Koch is the story of the Koch brothers' attempt to convince the public to reject the recall and keep the governor in office. A discussion follows with filmmaker Carl Deal, who also co-produced Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 911 with Michael Moore, and Jeff Smith, assistant professor of politics and advocacy, who was the subject of the documentary, Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?

Concert | Wordless Music Orchestra and Grey Mcmurray

Program: "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield in a new arr. by Grey Mcmurray. "Tubular Bells" by the English musician Mike Oldfield was released in 1973 when he was only 19 years old. The composition’s opening piano solo was used in the soundtrack to The Exorcist, gaining the album considerable airplay because of the film’s success. The entire work is an ambitious, almost symphonic set of variations on a theme and is replete with good cheer and a bit of droll British wit. This performance features a world premiere orchestration of the seminal work by the Wordless Music Orchestra led by guitarist and singer Grey Mcmurray.
