It is here, as much as anywhere, where American history started. It's where the first US Congress assembled and produced the Bill of Rights and where President George Washington took his first oath of office. It's here where the world's most important stock exchange and one of the most famous bridges stand. And it is here where an unspeakable tragedy took place and where a rebirth is underway.

Concert | English Musical Rarities of the 17th Century

Before foreign virtuosi arrived in England in the mid 17th century, violin writing in the Fantasia-Suite closely resembled writing for the viol. The idioms diverged with Jenkins’s exposure to Italian style. Music before this exposure is generally neglected, but it is at least as interesting. Trio Coprario will offer rarely played works from this period.

Lecture | Not a Video Game Anymore: Tomb Raiders and Their Contested Relationship with Organized Crime in Contemporary Italy

Nicknames like “the magician” or “the Etruscan” do not belong to common criminals that police officers encounter in cities around the world these days. Instead, they belong to tomb raiders who operate in the vast fields along Italy. Their jobs: to scout the terrain in search of centuries old unopened tombs that might reveal a once in a lifetime archaeological finding. And the bad news is they often succeed in their endeavors. This presentation focuses on illicit archaeological diggings that have taken place in the last five decades in different geographical areas of Italy. It will introduce the audience to this particular crime : mostly, how it is done and how it has changed over time and space, using data sources such as police records, journalistic accounts, statements from tomb raiders and personal photographs of pillaged sites, among others. Lecturer Marc Balcells is a Spanish criminologist, holding degrees in Law, Criminology and Human Sciences, and masters both in Criminal Law, and in Art Crimes and Cultural Heritage Protection.

Opening Reception | Sydney Drum's Digital/Painting

The water paintings by Sydney Drum explore the intersections of painting, digital media, and photography. Some elements are hand-painted (a labor-intensive, low-tech method); others use digital technology to explore how it has changed the way we view the world around us (an emphatically high-tech process). The well-known critic Gerrit Henry in an Art in America review of her work, wrote that Drum mixes up all kinds of esthetic impulses, and handles color with unswerving confidence.

Concert | La Santa Cecilia, Latin Alternative Band

Named for the patron saint of musicians, La Santa Cecilia has deep roots in the immigrant community of Los Angeles. The band's six members draw inspiration not only from their rich heritage, but also from their everyday lives growing up embedded in American culture. Deemed the “Best Latin Alternative Band of The Year” by LA Weekly, the band performs with gutsy vocals and a roaring accordion that fuel a powerful pan-Latin hybrid of modern-day Latin, rock and world music. The Mexican-American band is fronted by Marisoul, a “zaftig, bilingual mama equally happy singing boleros or Janis Joplin” (Village Voice) demonstrating the band’s love of fun while also diving into the deep injustices of deportation and the immigration system.
