Tour | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | Faustilla the Pawnbroker and Other Tales of Gender and Finance in the Early Roman Empire

This lecture discusses female involvement in the public management of money during the first century of the Roman Empire. An ideology of gendered “separate spheres” was prevalent in the ancient world, emphasizing the importance of women’s place in the private, domestic realm, while assigning the space of business and finance to male citizens. Yet significant evidence exists that women did participate in financial transactions, both on micro- and macro-levels, from Faustilla the pawnbroker’s activities in Pompeii to the empress Livia’s grain sales from her estates in Egypt.,/br> Associate Professor of Classics Kristina Milnor considers this evidence: what we know, how we know it, and what this knowledge tells us about the opportunities and challenges facing ancient Roman women. Professor Milnor is the author of Gender, Domesticity, and the Age of Augustus: Inventing Private Life.

Concert | Bach Suites in the Dark, a "Concert Exhibition"

Cellist Augustin Maurs's Bach Suites in the Dark offers a unique approach to Bach’s Cello Suites. After of years of investigation, the Suites are removed from the concert hall and placed in an unilluminated space, in which the cellist repeatedly plays them over a period of ten days. Through the extended time frame and the elimination of any visual input, the listener and the playing musician are unified within the same visual and musical space. Originally conceived as studies, Bach’s Cello Suites are a series of dances written around 1720. Although unaccompanied, they are expansive polyphonic musical masterpieces, considered both the beginning and culmination of the cello repertoire. Uncertainty about the original creative intentions of the Suites invites perpetual debate and allows imaginative free reign for redefining the environment in which they are played. Bach Suites in the Dark removes the Suites from the concert hall explores their malleability and the notion of practice in which they are rooted.

Lecture | Fighting Someone Else's Wars? Irish Mercenaries, Soldiers, and Adventurers in the New World, 1776-1865

Between 1776 and 1865, thousands of Irishmen took up arms in military conflicts all over the Americas. What were their motives and expectations? And how did their dubious loyalties in Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Cuba, and Argentina shape their shifting identities and transform the ethnonational images of the Irish in the New World? Lecturer José Shane Brownrigg-Gleeson is a PhD candidate and teaching assistant at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He is completing a study on the connections between Ireland and Latin America during the latter’s struggle for independence, and is currently the recipient of a research grant from the Atlantic History Seminar at Harvard University.
