Lecture | A Hetman Worthy of the Name: Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Early-Eighteenth Century Ukrainian Historiography

A lecture by Professor Frank Sysyn (University of Alberta). In the early eighteenth century, the cult of Bohdan Khmelnytsky as the founder of the Cossack Hetmanate and the liberator of his people from “Polish bondage” took full shape. The most important text in disseminating this image of the hetman is conventionally called the Hrabianka chronicle because some of the more than 60 extant manuscripts of the work attribute its authorship to the Cossack colonel Hryhorii Hrabianka. In fact the attribution is questionable and the two differing forms of the work, the long and the short redactions, point to multiple-authorships during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. More certain is the impact of the work in elevating the person of the hetman to a central status in the history of the Cossack Hetmanate and in defining that polity’s relation with the Russian tsar. The talk will discuss the significance of the work in the creation of the Khmelnytsky myth and its impact on the Ukrainian historical narrative.

Recovered from the depths of the online art platform known as Google Art Project, João Enxuto and Erica Love betray the ambiguities inherent in the experience of visual art in the age of digital culture. Deliberately selecting the censored cast-offs that are blurred due to copyright restrictions, their project emphasizes the condition of the art object today as one of contingency, while revealing Google Art Project's elevation of mass culture as an expansion of corporate culture's influence over the comparatively "dusty" environs of the world's great museums.

Film | Jim Epstein's The Tragedy of Urban Renewal (2011): Documentary on a Neighborhood's Destruction and Survival

In 1949, President Harry Truman signed the Housing Act, which gave federal, state, and local governments unprecedented power to shape residential life. One of the Housing Act's main initiatives - "urban renewal" - destroyed about 2,000 communities in the 1950s and '60s and forced more than 300,000 families from their homes. Overall, about half of urban renewal's victims were black, a reality that led to James Baldwin's famous quip that "urban renewal means Negro removal."

The performance will be preceded by a series of short talks on body and music featuring writer and filmmaker Elena Mannes and music philosopher Peter Szendy.
