Forum | (New) Public Goods: Design, Aesthetics, and Politics

This Fall's Stephan Weiss Lecture considers the import of design practices concerned with the production and distribution of public goods, including public services and utilities, public policy, government institutions, and other organizations working within the public realm or subjected to broad public scrutiny. Increasingly, the focus of design is shifting from questions of form to questions of transformation. The Weiss Lecture will explore the challenges these design practices pose to the relationship between institutional infrastructure and regulative norms, as well as to emerging forms of commons and community. Configured as a Design Strategies Dialogue, this event brings together five leading figures from the world of design and the social sciences: - PELLE EHN: Professor at Malmö University's School of Arts and Communication - MARIA HELLSTRÖM REIMER: Professor at Malmö University School of Arts and Communication and Director of Studies for the Swedish Faculty for Design Research and Research Education - CARL DISALVO: Associate Professor in the Digital Media program in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology - JOAN GREENBAUM: Professor Emerita at City University of New York and the New Media Lab at the CUNY Graduate Center - KEITH MURPHY: Assistant Professor of Anthropology at University of California Irvine.

Tour | Midtown Manhattan Tour

Arguably the world's most valuable, busiest and most crowded pieces of real estate, Midtown Manhattan is what most visitors think of when they think of New York City. Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. Performance | Ernesto Pujol’s Time After Us, a 24-Hour Walking Performance for 24 Performers

For his first public piece in New York, site-specific performer and social choreographer Pujol asks: “What if we could go back in time to revisit, repair, restore?” The work is performed in silence by Pujol and twenty-three artists, who enter the space at thirty-minute intervals during its first 12 hours. Lasting a full twenty-four hours, the piece creates a solitary yet bonded community, inviting people from all walks of life to observe and reflect on the nature of the paths they take. Time After Us will open at 10:30am and will conclude, 24 hours later, on Friday, October 4 at 10:30am. Pujol has recruited individuals of all ages from New York’s dance, theater and visual arts communities; artists who are seeking a different kind of practice. The group will walk a circle counterclockwise and backwards, slowly turning the center of the chapel into a well, a vortex where the body will walk nowhere and everywhere at once. Audiences are invited to sit with the performers, free to come and go, experiencing it at different times of the day and night.

Author Reading | Diana Howansky Reilly discusses her book Scattered: The Forced Relocation of Poland's Ukrainians after World War II

Following World War II, the communist government of Poland forcibly relocated the country's Ukrainian minority by means of a Soviet-Polish population exchange and then a secretly planned action code-named Operation Vistula. Diana Howansky Reilly recounts these events through the experiences of three siblings caught up in the conflict, during a turbulent period when compulsory resettlement was a common political tactic used against national minorities to create homogenous states.
