Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Dance Performance | Control Dominion, Choreography by Teresa Fellion

In Control Dominion, dancers in this cyborg society struggle between individual will and governing control. They explore opposing forces of surrender and domination, revealing harrowing pitfalls of the proselytizing hive mind. Frenetic, alert movement and intricate phrases in distorted style are programmed rather than organic. Inward rotations, tensile contractions, and reverberations pierce and manipulate bodies and space. Dynamic progressions of activity become chock full of manic activity as dancers fling, throw, jerk, jump, stiffen, fall, roll, lift, and engage sometimes beyond their capacity to control. Complex rhythmic sequences create gradations of synchronicity vs. presumed anarchy.

City Walk | Lower East Side Food Tour

Where can you find a historic Synagogue next to a storefront Buddhist Temple, trendy boutiques that sit comfortably beside decades-old "Mom and Pop" shops, or tenament apartments interspersed between luxury high rise condos? Look no further than the Lower East Side to discover America's great Melting Pot. Once an insular slum with the one of the world's highest population densities and lowest life expectancies, its streets tell the tales of immigrant struggles and rags to riches stories. Known for a time as Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), this neighboorhood was also the Jewish ward, home today to a mix of foreign-born Latinos and Asians as well as students and hipsters. The result is one of New York City's most dynamic and interesting neighborhoods and a food lover's paradise.

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: Lights and Shadows

Lights and Shadows is a showcase for emerging, mid-career and leading artists around the world. It features three Japanese artists who each work in different media to create monotone-colored pieces. Through pen drawing, installation, and photography, these artists present images that play with the shadows of their creations. The dance between light and shadow that each of these artists explores raises questions about and beyond the search for beauty in darkness; they probe notions of abundance and emptiness, permanence and temporariness, and the weight of material creation and its lasting impression.

Talk | Kimberly Marten discusses her book Warlords: Strong-Arm Brokers and Weak States

Professor Kimberly Marten will make a short presentation of her new book to be followed by a question-and-answer session. Drawing on interviews, documents, local press reports, and in-depth historical analysis, Marten examines warlordism in the Pakistani tribal areas during the twentieth century, in post-Soviet Georgia and the Russian republic of Chechnya, and among Sunni militias in the U.S.-supported Anbar Awakening and Sons of Iraq programs. In each case state leaders (some domestic and others foreign) created, tolerated, actively supported, undermined, or overthrew warlords and their militias. Marten draws lessons from these experiences to generate new arguments about the relationship between states, sovereignty, "local power brokers," and stability and security in the modern world.

Lecture | Beautiful Suffering: Friedrich Schiller and Contemporary German Photography

With Prof. Frauke Berndt. In a series of letters "On the Aesthetic Education of Man" (1795) Friedrich Schiller secured the aesthetic mediation of the ethical ideal anthropologically and framed it within a history-philosophical perspective. Yet, humans not only devote themselves to this ideal, but rather literally engrave these role models which aesthetically convey this ideal in their bodies –at least, that’s how Jens Neumann and Edgar Rodtmann see it. Neumann and Rodtmann have operated a studio for portrait and photojournalism in Berlin-Kreuzberg since 1995. In their photo series "Bodies" created in 2007, they photographed people who had made their bodies the medium of their ideal and glorified themselves as ‘completed individuals’ in the traces of suffering.

Lecture | The Potential and Promise of Feminist Voices in Islam

In the last two decades of the twentieth century, a growing confrontation between political Islam and feminism rendered the links between theology, law, and politics transparent. The Islamist agenda of policing women’s presence in public space has led to the emergence of feminist forms of activism that have challenged patriarchal interpretations of the Shari’a from within the Muslim tradition. Ziba Mir-Hosseini explores Islamic feminism’s potential for changing the terms of debates over Islam and gender, arguing that the real battle is between patriarchy and despotism on the one hand, and gender equality and democracy on the other. A legal anthropologist specializing in Islamic law, gender, and development, Mir-Hosseini is professorial research associate at the Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Law, University of London.

Lecture | To Have And To Owe, a Research Platform and Event Series

The New York City opening of To Have And To Owe, a research platform and event series for thinking about debt. Focused on the social relations that debt engenders, To Have And To Owe has invited a range of artists, theorists, designers and more to offer lectures, workshops, performances, discussions, and visualizations to explore the subject of debt, and open up a space in which its aesthetic and social dimensions may be considered as part of its economic register. Tonight: To Have and To Owe co-organizer Leigh Claire La Berge and theorist Annie McClanahan will share their respective work on cultural representations of debt--from how the language and metaphors of finance impact how we understand the social world around us to how photographic depictions of foreclosure show economics and aesthetics working in tandem and in tension.

Lecture | Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel-Winning Economist, on the Price of Inequality

The impact of inequality on societies is now increasingly well understood - higher crime, health problems and mental illness, lower educational achievements, social cohesion and life expectancy. But what are the causes of inequality, why is it growing so rapidly, and how is it affecting the economy? These are the questions Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, professor at Columbia University, will discuss in a presentation of his latest book, The Price of Inequality: How Today's Divided Society Endangers Our Future. In this talk, Stiglitz will discuss how, left to their own devices, markets are neither efficient nor stable, and will tend to accumulate money in the hands of the few. The presentation will be followed by a discussion between Joseph Stiglitz, Michael Cohen, director of the Graduate Program in International Affairs and Teresa Ghilarducci, Bernard L. and Irene Schwartz Chair in Economic Policy Analysis and director of the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis. Moderated by New School president David Van Zandt.
